Baker is a funny, lively, smart energetic young malamute/german shepherd mix. He was not given a lot of training when young, so he has been catching up on that. In his current foster home, Baker has demonstrated that he can turn a key to open a lock - he is that smart. Being smart, he is rather like an adolescent/teenage boy - he needs consistent rules. If he finds he can get away with something once - well, maybe he can get away with it again....
Baker is being fostered by one of our favorite trainers, who is working on giving him some of the skills he needs. Here are a few of the things she has to say about him: Baker is tenacious. He thrives when he is challenged in a structured environment. This dog wants to work and he wants to please. He does have the capacity to be a jackass (as said earlier, he is a lot like an adolescent boy). Baker enjoys working, swimming, chasing balls, and walking and running at heel on lead. He is comfortable with his own company and will relax in the kennel when you let him know that is what he is supposed to do. Consistency and structure are his keys.
If you are into field work, the trainer reports Baker is responding well to beginning hand signals in the field and is developing a self-initiated check pattern. He has a 'good nose' - shows some tracking skills.
Baker will require a secure, bolted roof kennel on a concrete pad - or something similar. If the kennel is just on dirt, he will dig under it, and he can clear 6 feet. He has a strong prey drive, so would not be good in a home with small dogs, cats or rabbits, or other small pets.
Baker will be a wonderful partner/companion for the person or family who will maintain consistent rules and training with this high octane youngster as he matures. And lots of love. The trainer who has fostered and worked with Baker believes he will give you his heart, his loyalty, a tenacious work ethic, & evolve into your dog of a lifetime.
