My Story

Meet Baxter! Baxter is a 7-year-old, 7-pound chihuahua mix from New York. He's a tiny, lazy, little gentleman who loves people. Baxter can be a little shy when you first meet him. However, it doesn't take long to start chipping away at those walls and see his adorable personality come through. Baxter spends most of his days napping, but you can catch him with an energy burst and a hankering for playtime usually right after dinner. A fun fact about Baxter is that he is vocal when he's excited, especially during playtime & mealtime. He sleeps in his dog bed next to his foster parents' bed without issue. He is not a big snuggler, but he likes to be in the same room as his people. When he wants pets, he rubs against his foster parents like a cat! Getting kisses from Baxter is rare but has happened -- you just have to earn it from him. Baxter has exocrine pancreatic insufficiency (EPI), which is easily managed by a low fat diet, pancreatic enzyme supplements, and vitamin B12. If he is not on the right diet, his body cannot absorb the nutrients and expels it all, causing him to lose weight and lost control of his bowels. His future family must be committed to keeping him on this diet for the sake of his health. Baxter's abilities with obedience training are limited. He knows how to sit, but does not know anything else beyond that. His forever family will need to commit to helping him learn new skills, once he is fully comfortable in his new home. He is extremely food motivated, so we think he will be a great student. Baxter has been accepting to all petting & handling in his foster home. He also will need to establish a routine for housetraining. Currently, he is wearing belly bands and learning to use pads indoors. He likes to go outside and is great on the leash, however does not pee or poop while he's out there. His forever family will need to be comitted to keeping up with his training. Baxter is fine & non-destructive when left alone. He finds a place to snooze and wait for you while his foster parents are gone. When they return, they are greeted with a few celebratory barks and lots of love! Baxter would do best in a low key home, with patient & understanding parents. He would be okay in a home with another low key dog. He is currently living with a chihuahua mix, and they mostly ignore each other, coexisting peacefully. Baxter has not been exposed to cats or children while in our care. Vaccinated for rabies and DA2PP. Heartworm negative and microchipped. Needs neuter when of appropriate weight. Up to date on flea, tick, and heartworm prevention. To apply for Baxter, visit our website (www.waggytailrescue.org) for an adoption application. It is important to fill out an application as soon as possible for consideration, and we require a complete application for you to meet an animal. We are currently unable to respond to general email inquiries as an all-volunteer run rescue. If the animal is on our website, they are still available. Waggytail Rescue CANNOT guarantee the exact age of any adoptable dog, or final size of any of our adoptable puppies. We rely on the information provided to us by veterinarians, shelters, owner surrenders and other circumstances bringing the dog into our rescue. Adoptions: [email protected]
