My Story
Bell is a 3 yr old yorkie mix, 4.5 - 5 lbs, spayed, and current on vaccines...
Bell is a bundle of energy. She LOVES to play., with people or dogs. She will actually fetch toys and bring them back for you to throw again... again... and again. She sometimes even catches them in mid-air when you throw them. She is quite the little acrobat.
She will try to play with your fingers as another toy. When she starts to do that, I tuck my thumb and wrap my fingers around it in a fist. Then I tell her to go find a toy, and off she goes to bring you a toy to throw. She knows what the word 'toy' means.
Bell will follow you everywhere, and the minute you sit down, she wants in your lap or to play fetch.
She is pee pad trained. She must have been an apartment dog in the past. But she loves to go on walks, she gets excited when you pick up her harness and leash, and runs to the door to go out.
When she first came to our rescue. I used a 36 in, crate opening on the long side, put her bed on one side and a small pee pad on the other. She always ate in the crate because she would try to eat other dogs' food, and I would crate her when I left the house just for safety sake I put a large pee pad outside of, but near, her crate. And she always used one of those pee pads.
When she is finished playing she curls up in your lap, and loves to sleep snuggled next to you at night. She was crated at night for the first couple of weeks, but graduated to my bed.
She had started to do some of her business in the yard with the other dogs, but still usually ran to one of her pee pads when she needed to go. I don't think it would be hard to train her to go outside, as she is very smart.
She knows sit, down and does pretty good with wait. It is unusual to see such a small dog who knows so many commands. She is smart and eager to learn. She is also treat motivated.
She must have some allergies, she had lost a lot of hair when she came to us. After a round of antibiotics, and some supplements, her hair is growing back.
The vet recommended children's liquid zyrtec and a fish oil supplement. I have experienced that Dinovite is also good for skin/hair related allergies, so I added that as well. 2 of my own personal dogs with skin/hair issues have done well on it, as well as other dogs I know.
Bell will be a delight for almost any family. She does well with dogs, cats and loves older children. Because of her size, I would not recommend small toddlers.
