My Story

AUGUST 28, 2004 The family who wanted Big Black were waiting at PetsMart when Tina and our crew of volunteers arrived. Tina went on the home visit, and all went well. Big Black got along well with the other family dog and the kids. A real good home; a real good family! AUGUST 1, 2004 Big Black is now free of worms and completely healthy! Please consider adopting this sweet fellow. He needs a home without cats or small dogs, but does very well with large dogs. This guy will be a great addition to a home like the Bollingers', who have already adopted three of our older dogs--Maggie, Dallas and Gretchen. Older dogs have a lot going for them, and they need someone to help get them through their old age. JULY 15, 2004 The clinic called late afternoon advising that Big Black's new arrivals checkup was finished and he was ready to be picked up. No heartworms, thank goodness, but he does have hook worms, which we have the meds to treat him for. The big old dog is about 10 years old, weighs 85 pounds and has very dirty ears, which we are to clean daily--no infection. We put Big Black in the barn kennel, the one Pat had stopped using years ago because it has common fences with both Sandy and Fritz's kennel, and these guys like to start fence wars whenever possible. And sure enough, these two rough fellas tried to provoke a fight as soon as Big Black was in his new kennel, but Big Black ignored the two younger dogs, which defused the potentially hostile situation almost immediately. This old Black Lab is so docile the others stopped their barking right away and just stared at him as if they were wondering what was wrong with him. JULY 15, 2004 We received a call today from a neighbor woman whose husband was planning to shoot a straydog if it wasn't gone by the time he got home from work today What could we do? ... The woman said the big old Black Lab (with a cropped tail) had wandered up to their house down the road a couple of days ago. The woman was considering keeping the dog, who got along well with their kids and their other dog, but then this morning the dog accidentally killed four kittens while trying to play with them. When the husband heard this, he said he would be putting a .22 caliber bullet in the dog's head as soon as he got home from work, so the woman put the dog in the back of her truck and brought him to us. We have no room for him, but somehow we will squeeze him in.
