My Story

A Dog Named Blackjack Animal Rescue Recovery saved Blanco from a high kill shelter with only minutes to live! Have you ever considered adopting a Rescue? They make the greatest additions to a family as they know they have been rescued. ID 242870 Meet Blanco! Blanco is a loving, intelligent and energetic white German shepherd who was rescued from the high kill shelter in Apple Valley, CA on the day he was scheduled to be euthanized. He is approximately 3 years old, just shy of 60 pounds, neutered, microchipped, currently fully vaccinated, on heart worm, flea and tick preventatives, and has been given a clean bill of health by his veterinarian. We don’t know much about this cuddly boy prior to shelter life, although it was mentioned he may be good with goats and chickens, and it’s believed that his previous owner was neglectful and possibly abusive. He is a little shy at first when meeting a new human, but once they show they are trustworthy, he warms right up, and he was very well-behaved and relaxed at the veterinary office. He has not yet been temperament tested with cats and children. Blanco doesn’t have any other pets at his current foster house, but he likes to greet the neighbor dogs through the fence with tail wags, play bows, whimpers and running along the fence without any aggression. Once his greeting is over, he quietly goes about his own business of chasing lizards by day and chasing bunnies and mice by night, as well as staying close to his foster mom while he keeps watch over his surroundings. Up to this point, he ignores birds in the yard, including mourning doves and a roadrunner that have wandered around only a few feet in front of him. Indoors, he enjoys being in the same room as the humans. He enjoys naps on his beds and will go to his “kennel” (wire crate) on his own accord to rest, and is well-behaved in his crate when the humans are gone. He likes picking stuffed toys out of the toy box and has fun quickly figuring out puzzle toys filled with treats. Chew toys filled with peanut butter and treats aren’t his preference but he loves gnawing on a Nylabone or Greenie between meals. Most of all, he loves cuddles, pats and scratches! He would love to sleep in the same bed as his humans, but if that’s not allowed, everyone in the house will rest more peacefully if he sleeps in his crate. Blanco is also good at communicating his needs. He wags his head and chomps his mouth at the air when he “talks” to the humans (usually to tell them he is hungry, bored or needs outside). If the humans aren’t petting him as he sees fit, he will help them by placing his head under their hands or lean up against them. He will also nudge with his nose and occasionally nibble at the humans’ shirts to get their attention. This adventurous boy enjoys walking with a harness and a leash and generally responds quickly when redirected from pulling. He also wears his collar proudly and nudges the humans to put it back on when we adjust it. He hasn’t perfected the “heal” command yet, but he doesn’t pull excessively either, and with consistent work, he will improve. In the short time with his foster parents, Blanco has demonstrated how clever and intelligent he is as he learns new commands and tricks including “sit”, “down”, “kennel”, “shake”, “roll over”, “leave it”, and “come”. He has also shown a keen ability to figure out how to solve puzzles and can tell exactly where his humans are outside in relation to the rooms of the house, even if he can’t see out any windows. He will thrive in a home where the humans have consistent rules and expectations, and are willing to work with him every day until he reaches mastery. As a young, energetic, lightning-fast working breed, he will also be best suited for a home with a large yard and/or humans who will take him on long walks or runs and work with him every day every day. For someone interested in agility training, Blanco would most assuredly excel!
