My name is Bo. But it could just as well be “Boo!” because I get startled, and I’m often jumpy and anxious. You would probably be a bit unsettled, too, if your world was upended like mine. But I am optimistic that this is just a stage, and once I am comfortable with my place in this new world, I will go from Boo to Bodacious! I am a retired breeder. I had to leave the only home I ever had because my owner got sick. I am beginning to understand that getting surrendered to As Good as Gold is the best thing that could have happened to me, but there has been a learning curve for sure. I’ve had some very loving foster moms who have taken great care of me, but there have been bumps along the way. I am what my foster moms call “unsocialized,” which I think means that I am a nervous Nellie (er, Nelson) who needs to learn some manners. Because I get overwhelmed with the newness of everything, I can get clingy with whomever is taking care of me. I need reassurance. My foster moms have lovingly given me that, but they also understand that I need to chill. So, the vet prescribed a chill pill that has helped me settle. In fact, I’m doing so much better that we have been decreasing the dose! My first foster mom was so kind to open her home to me, but she had a dog of her own, and for some reason, I was not comfortable with that, so I was a little aggressive. That’s strange, because as a breeder, my whole life was spent around other dogs. Perhaps I was simply reacting to all the changes I was bombarded with. But now that I am in a home with no other dogs, I am much more content and relaxed. I love having mom all to myself. Hopefully, I will someday be able to happily hang out with canine compadres, but until then, it’s best if I am the only dog in the home. And yes, I have manners to learn. Who knew that jumping, counter surfing or chewing on random items wasn’t acceptable behavior? Well, you probably did, but it’s all new to me. Luckily, foster mom says I am very smart, so if you’re willing to teach me, I will be very willing to learn. The same goes for learning commands. I promise that my primer of commands (like stay, drop it, shake, come) will be dog-eared (hee-hee) before long from my diligent study. Mom calls me a “gem,” but I know she really means that I am a diamond in the rough. Maybe underneath my imperfections, you will find something as grand as the Hope Diamond! I sure hope so.
