My Story

Boyer ACCT-A-168375 is a 4-year-old male who came in as a stray on 7/5. The finder noted that Boyer was "scared, shy, scared around strangers, upset around other animals. During his time at the shelter, Boyer has shown heightened levels of fear, anxiety, and stress as he adjusts to his new circumstances. Slow to trust, but a delightful friend to those he knows, Boyer is hoping for a new caretaker that will allow their friendship to grow on his time. Behavior Notes: Per staff on 7/13: Took Boyer (now in ISO) for a walk (See video: On a walk with Boyer). Observed no concerning reactivity throughout. He gave me his usual wide-eyed glare & sniff when I opened his kennel door but allowed me to drape the slip leash over his head without trouble. Once the leash is on, he knows the drill: he hopped off his kuranda bed and was ready to walk. Outdoors, he happily sniffed around. Both peed and pooped. Didn't appear very interested in socializing. Shrank away a bit when I needed to adjust his leash, but tolerated me doing so. No issues replacing him in his kennel. Per staff on 7/11: Visited Boyer in his office with one of his usual office fosters present. Found him in his crate. Didn't observe any reactivity besides some slight grumble upon first seeing me, for the 10-15 minutes I spent seated near the front of his crate offering treats, during which the office foster exited. (See video: Boyer buries his Cheeto.) The other office foster entered the office and we sat with Boyer for a few minutes. When I went to leave - rising from my seated position in front of the crate - he quickly escalated into growls and snapping at my ankles. This lasted for a couple seconds only; he retreated back into his kennel after I ceased moving and his offer foster told him "No". I remained in the room for a few more minutes; Boyer was neutral in his now-closed crate. His other office foster entered, we spoke for a minute, and I accompanied her and Boyer on a walk. She leashed him without issue and he exited his crate without displaying any reactivity toward me -- excited to go out, tail a bit wiggly, sniffing at my legs a moment but ultimately ignoring me. Through the building and outdoors, he was attentive to his handler and walked well on leash. While outdoors he approached me a few times for sniffs and gentle pets on his chest and shoulders, quickly going back to sniffing around. Peed and pooped outside. On returning to the office, I reentered to see if there was any difference in his reactions to me. He attempted to hump my leg, was discouraged with "No", then reattempted a minute later after I sat down. His handler then removed his leash and he retreated to his crate. After crouching down one last time and extending my hand (keeping the wall of the crate as a barrier between us), Boyer slightly lip-raised and snapped toward my hand. I exited the office without any further reactivity. On 7/9 staff noted: "Boyer has been in my office for a few days now, and he is such a sweet little man! He's very nervous, and gets overwhelmed easily, but once he feels safe, he solicits attention readily and will give kisses. He likes to find a small place to curl up and hide in when he's feeling nervous, and loves his crate. He walks well on leash, and looks to his handler constantly for reassurance. On 7/6 during a behavior evaluation staff noted: "When the handler approached his kennel, Boyer avoided eye contact and tried to ignore the handler. He pushed himself in the corner and started shaking. The handler was able to put the leash around him and he came out easily. Pulls minimally on leash. When Boyer came into the eval room he greeted the handlers with a wagging tail and wide eyes. He jumped up for pets and kisses and when the handlers talked too much or too loud he would hide under the chair. He likes to chase his tail and makes the cutest running circles around the room and any object he can find. He even made circles under the chair and around the handlers legs. Boyer allowed all handling even over his sores and sensitive areas. He was very tolerate and lets you know when he's had enough. Boyer does sometimes give a little intense eye contact but does not escalate. He is very cute and a sweet boy. Engages in play, very short lived. No interest in toys. On 7/5 staff noted: " Friendly, sweet, shy man. Not food motivated, doesn't like hot dogs. Lost trust in me after giving vaccines and Bordetella. Was allowing pets and cuddles before vaccines and Bordetella. Did well with all handling and restraint during intake. Medical Notes: On 7/11, Boyer was diagnosed with an upper respiratory infection. PCR test results showed that he was positive for pneumovirus, and he was relocated to the ISO ward for recovery. On 7/5 during an intake exam staff noted: Boyer's eyes were pink, his ears were waxy, and he had moderate dental calculus. Staff also noted "whole body is trimmed, appears to have road rash on abdomen/legs/back, left hind paw has a wound, no live fleas found, pressure sores on hind. possible limp on hind left leg. Staff noted Boyer to be quiet, alert, responsive, friendly, sweet and shy.
