My Story

JUST A BIG HAPPY GO LUCKY YOUNG MAN WITH A HEART OF GOLD AND A GREAT HEAD START IN LIFE. We found Bruce and his sibling Otis (adopted) dumped in an orchard during our first winter snow fall of the season back in early December. They were only about 12 weeks old. Both dogs were placed into different foster homes and flourished in foster care. Bruce is a big guy at around 70lbs and will get bigger, since he is only about 9 months old but not so big as to require rearranging the household or having to buy a new car or truck. Big enough to intimidate the bad guys but not too big to manage. This very handsome guy has lived in a country family home and currently enjoys country family living but could be at home in a variety of situations. His buddies are a big black lab and a Red and White Setter who have taught him to use his nose for tracking and following scent trails and together they have lots of fun so if you have a dog, looking for a big fun friend, Bruce can make that happen and maybe even show them a thing or two. We cannot say for sure, whether Bruce is a combination of the two breeds listed. He also might have some Collie or some German Shepherd or some Lab or even Black Mouth Curr but whatever the combo, it came together to make a very handsome dog, with gentle heart and a desire to please. It also left him with double dew claws in the rear, (they were removed during his neuter) which is how we know there is some type of livestock guardian dog in his DNA. He also has a thick double coat plus an even keel temperament and easy way of going, typical of the LGD breeds but unlike the guardians, he is more pliable and willing to listen, learn and follow your rules. Case in point, his very excellent recall. How are his housebreaking skills? Glad you asked. Bruce knows how to ring the bells attached to the door, to be asked to go outside for potty time (and to remind you it's past dinner time). You won't find that in too many rescue dogs this young and it is just a very small indicator of this dog's intelligence and desire to learn and please. He would be an excellent candidate for those word buttons, you can teach a dog to use, to communicate with you in human speak. Bruce is also crate trained, walks good on a leash but could use some fine tuning, since he's mostly a farm dog. He has also decided truck rides are fun so he would make a great adventure buddy for someone who loves nature, hiking, camping and experiencing the world on foot. He has great energy, in that he could go on an all-day adventure one day, and just chill at your feet, watching movies the next. With Bruce, you get the best of both worlds. He, of course, is an awesome farm dog, which he not only comes by naturally but has had those skills reinforced by his living situation. He has natural protective instincts but does not show any desire to herd. He loves kids and is gentle with the wee ones, including infants, and has a natural protective side too, that will sound the alarm if there are strangers about who should not be there. As he matures, we have no doubt, he will do more than bark, if his people are seriously threatened and in danger. If Bruce has any flaws, it is that he is a bit puppy timid, in new situations but his foster is working on broadening his world and he is doing well. He also has some food sensitivities and we have discovered he does great on a raw or lightly cooked food diet that we are happy to share with you. Many people feed raw or lightly cooked, even without sensitivities so if you are one of them, then this is not a deterrent but a plus. All in all, Bruce is just a big, stunningly handsome, good natured, intelligent and loving young fella who loves to learn, is quick about it and wants someone to give his heart to. If that is you, please go to our website at www.allmuttsgreatandsmall.org/adoption and fill out the application. Bruce is scheduled for neuter on May 30 and after he heals up, will be ready to go. He is current on his five way and rabies vaccines, has been fecal tested and treated for worms, is tick and flea free, microchipped, well started on his training and primed up for his forever home, with his special person or persons.
