PLEASE READ THE INFORMATION IN THE DOG'S PROFILE, AS WELL AS THE INFORMATION ON OUR WEBSITE BEFORE EMAILING US WITH QUESTIONS. Our Volunteers use up valuable time answering questions, when the answers are readily available on our website. Our adoptions come with 30 days of free post-adoption support through Petcademy.org.
We are a foster-based rescue. We do not have a facility. MEET & GREETS FOR DOGS IN ONTARIO WILL ONLY BE ARRANGED ONCE AN ADOPTION APPLICATION IS APPROVED. THANK YOU!!!

OUT-OF-TOWN Dogs with NDR refer to dogs we have saved that have yet to make their journey to Ontario. These dogs are currently in our care with the help of our partners in the area. These dogs will all travel to the Niagara Region once an appropriate adopter or local foster is found.
This dog is currently located in: Texas
Name: Butch (20240718-04)
Weight: 34.4lb
Age: 8 months (Est. DOB 10/25/2023)
Gender: male
Spayed/Neutered: yes
Medical Notes: healthy, still light positive erlichia (tick-bourne illness) test - being treated
Breed: lab mix
Colour: black with white nose, chest, and paws
Neck size (for collar): 12"
Height (from top of head): 23"
Length (from nose to base of tail): 26"
Crate size recommended: currently in 36"
Good with adults: yes, shy at first but warms up fast
Good with kids: yes, LOVES them
Good with other dogs: yes, adores them, follows them everywhere. Sometimes need to give older dogs a break from him if they don't want to play.
Good with cats: yes, he’s great: sniffs instead of chases, and mostly ignores, especially once the cat jumps up onto something instead of being on the floor
House trained: yes
Crate trained: yes
Energy level: medium-low: pretty low for a dog so young. Some parts of the day he needs to chew a lot, but a pork chew stick or a little bit of tug play wears him out. When he wants to chew on other dogs too much, he needs a nap.
Can be handled/touched: yes, very tolerant of touch anywhere
Barker: no, not really, barks at unexpected neighbor noises occasionally or when a visitor first arrives, but he quiets down or is redirected easily
Flight risk: no
Food aggressive: no, has very polite manners with waiting his turn
Walks on leash: still learning
Rides well in car: yes, especially when he can follow a car-trained dog. He is a bit more shy about getting in by himself.
Destructive: he is still a puppy so needs access restricted to items he’s not allowed to chew. He is good at dropping or leaving things you don't want him to have when he gets caught. If you make sure he is tired out before crating and has some enrichment, he won't tear up his bedding. However, a flat kind of donut bed instead of a big fluffy pillow helps him be successful in that regard.
Needs a home with a yard: yes
Needs a home with another dog: no, either way is fine
Can live in an apartment: no
Foster insights/story: Butch is a resilient little dude. He wandered up as a smaller puppy to an oil well and the workers there fed him, but none had room to take him home. He was timid around people at first around all the loud smells and sounds on the work site, but he bravely approached for food and later pets after a few weeks. He was the field workers' little mascot. Unfortunately, he disappeared for a few days and got into some trouble... but he knew where to come for help. He reappeared at the well, skinny and with deep infected dog bites all over his groin and back end. The oil company paid for his vet bills and a worker brought him home to keep him safe and get him patched up. He was so timid at first, too scared to even walk into the house. He slept right up against a door, as close to the open sky as he could get.
Despite his trauma, Butch healed and recovered and still has not lost his love of fellow dogs. He learned to LOVE indoors where the fun, big foster brother and sister live. He has a GREAT temperament. He takes treats very gently, even before any training (most dogs this age are baby sharks!). He picks up on new training commands very quickly, especially the ones that require patience, like waiting to eat, lying on a mat, or "leave/drop it" (very rare for an adolescent dog!). He amuses himself pretty well with enough toys lying around or some dogs to romp with, then sleeps for long naps. He can sleep through just about anything! He can sleep 8+hrs in the crate without needing to potty.
During the day, he asks to go outside by nosing the door, without even being trained. If you don't see him at the door, he whines to get your attention. He's pretty good with leash skills even though we've only just started training, but he's small and doesn't pull hard anyway. He is a great all-around family dog that would do well in almost any home: no advanced training skills or unique lifestyle required!
