My Story

PLEASE READ THE INFORMATION IN THE DOG'S PROFILE, AS WELL AS THE INFORMATION ON OUR WEBSITE BEFORE EMAILING US WITH QUESTIONS. Our Volunteers use up valuable time answering questions, when the answers are readily available on our website. Our adoptions come with 30 days of free post-adoption support through Petcademy.org. We are a foster-based rescue. We do not have a facility. MEET & GREETS FOR DOGS IN ONTARIO WILL ONLY BE ARRANGED ONCE AN ADOPTION APPLICATION IS APPROVED. THANK YOU!!! Please visit our website for more information: https://www.niagaradogrescue.com/ or fill in our adoption application: https://niagaradogrescue.com/adoption-application.php Name: Caeli (20231230-02) Age: 4 years Weight: 35 lbs Gender: Female Spayed/Neutered: Yes Breed: Potcake mix Colour: Black & white Neck size (for collar): Chest circumference (for harness): Height (from top of head): Length (from nose to base of tail): Crate size recommended: Medium Good with women: Yes Good with men: Yes Good with kids: Yes, older children as she is shy at first Good with other dogs: with slow introductions, can be reactive on leash Good with cats: Unknown House trained: mostly - doesn’t like the rain so may still have the occasional accident on rainy days Crate trained: No Energy level: Low/Medium Can be handled/touched: yes, she just needs a few minutes to get to know you first. Barker: no, rarely barks Flight risk: We consider all our dogs to be a flight risk until their adoptive families are 100% familiar with them and the dogs are used to their new environment. Caeli may especially be a flight risk in the beginning given her initial shyness and fear of loud noises. Food aggressive: No Current food: Varies, based on what the shelter has on hand Walks on leash: yes she walks well on the leash Leash reactive to people or dogs: can be reactive when seeing other dogs when she’s on a walk Rides well in car: Yes Destructive: No Needs a home with a yard: ideally yes, a quiet area would be best as she gets scared of loud noises Needs a home with another dog: with proper introductions, she may benefit from sharing a home with another dog to help with her shyness. Can live in an apartment: no, too many noises and people for her Backstory: Caeli was found in August, 2022 along with 10 other dogs that had been taken out into the jungle and tied to trees with no food or water and left to die. Thankfully, a concerned citizen learned of the dogs plight and called our shelter for help. All 11 animals were completely emaciated - we have no idea how long they had been left without food or water - and some could not stand. They were immediately given emergency medical treatment and, miraculously, they all survived and are now thriving (some have been adopted both in Mexico and in Canada, while others remain at our shelter waiting for their forever home.) It’s now Caeli’s turn. Caeli is shy with new people but curious of them. With patience and some yummy treats, she comes around quickly (it took me about half an hour). Once she trusts you, she will be happy to present you with her belly for rubs. She is a happy dog that wiggles her little tail with joy when she is excited. She has a calm energy even around other high energy dogs. Given her initial shyness, we don’t recommend a home with young children as their energy level and any sudden movements may frighten her and delay her ability to decompress properly. Canadian Foster Comments: Caeli is a wonderful companion. She was extremely traumatized and shaking with fear when I picked her up at Pearson Airport two months ago but she has really settled in and feels so much more comfortable now. She loves to go for walks and is excellent on the leash. She likes to snuggle with her humans on the couch and is always so happy to see you walk in the room. She still seems fearful of other dogs and needs some guidance and tools to cope. She is quiet, well-behaved and never barks. She is really just looking for someone to love her and take care of her and keep her safe. She is a really great dog.
