My Story

Update! Champ received his Canine Good Citizen certification!

Champ is a 14 month old Foxhound/Pit Bull terrier cross that loves music! He is about 60 lbs and is doing very well in the Phoenix Flight Prison Program (more information on Phoenix Flight below). He is a very handsome boy with stunning brindle markings who LOVES to play with Gucci, and any other dog that will play with him. His come command when we are working inside is a study in “I’m coming, but I’m not in any hurry”, but he really puts the “pedal to the metal” when we do comes outside! He learned sit and down very quickly and is a superstar on the stay. Champ is great with other dogs, but does seem to be cat reactive, so his new home should be cat-less. He is great with people and is reported to really like children.

Champ really wants to form a band. He loves new sounds, and found out that he could pull wires off of his crate and make really great noises! He happily collected 4 wires and was “pinging” away. Keeping the television or the radio on has resolved that problem, and the handlers will be letting us know what kind of music he likes best.

If you are looking for a family member that has a great sense of humor, is great with other dogs, and has some awesome tricks, fill out an application! After we receive your application, we will contact you and if it looks like a match we will spring Champ from prison so he can meet you.

Phoenix Flight

From Pound to Prison to Family

The Phoenix Flight Program is collaboration between the Missouri Eastern Correctional Center of the Missouri Department of Corrections and Phoenix Flight LLC, a division of Mutts-n-Stuff, that places rescued dogs in this Level 3 men’s prison to go through a structured training program for the dogs and handlers to have the dogs attain the Canine Good Citizen® award and be adopted into loving forever homes. Trainers from Mutts-n-Stuff select the dogs for the program and donate their time to do this training program. Volunteers from MECC assist in the training.

Inmates in the program have to meet rigorous selection criteria, and learn how to train, groom and care for the dogs. The inmate/handlers keep daily log books on the training homework, exercise, grooming and general information about each dog. The inmates constructed a dog ply yard in the facility so the dogs would have an off-lead play and exercise area. The dogs live in the cells and go everywhere with one of their pair of trainers except areas that are restricted such as the food and medical facilities.

Mutts-n-Stuff provides the dogs, crates, collars, leads, toy, food, treats, and medications and bears the expenses for the dogs in this program until they are adopted.

Sponsorship of an individual dog in the program is $200 which helps defray the costs of the equipment, medications and food. Sponsors will receive updates on their sponsored dog’s progress in the program. Please go to www.muttsandstuff.com to sponsor a dog or to donate to help us with this program! The dogs thank you!
