My Story

hapa - A Sweet Survivor in Need of a Loving Home! In January 2022, we received a call from someone in Kayenta about a stray female dog who had been hanging around their house. One day, she gave birth to a litter of puppies right next to their home. This was during a period of terrible weather with lots of snow and rain. The mom and her puppies were drenched and in desperate need of help. We rushed to the scene before a clinic we were scheduled to attend and found the puppies in the dirt, basically in a mud puddle, with their brave mom doing her best to keep them safe. Despite everything, Chapa was incredibly friendly and sweet from the very start. Chapa Now - A Shining Graduate of an 8-Week Board-In Training Program Chapa is now a little over three years old and is a proud graduate of an eight-week K9 board-in-training prison program! During her training, she was carefully desensitized and taught to make friends with dogs slowly. As she progressed, she thrived in close quarters with ten other dogs. At her graduation on July 11, her handlers showcased her impressive skills: heeling, responding to long-lead commands, placing on a mat, and even fun tricks like shaking paws and high-fives. Chapa's time in the program included living in a prison cell with two other dogs, who quickly became her best friends. This experience highlighted that her previous kennel/leash reactivity towards dogs was likely due to kennel stress (Chapa has been overlooked and has been with Soul Dog for almost 700 days!!) and an overwhelming desire to play. We're thrilled to see her blossom in a home environment, currently thriving at a temp foster's house alongside another dog. One of the incredible things about the prison training program is it comes with lifetime "alumni" classes on Thursdays, so if Chapa's new foster and/or adopter needs any refreshers, it's easy to access her high-quality training! Chapa is house-trained and so ready to join a loving family. She gets along well with other dogs with controlled and slow intros, and even cats with slow intros (depending on the cat). Chapa is a strong, joyful, and curious pup, so an owner who is committed, attentive, and capable of continuing her training is important. If you're looking for a loyal and exuberant companion, Chapa might be the perfect addition to your family. She loves little kids and is incredible with all humans. Please consider fostering or adopting this wonderful dog who has so much love and joy to offer! Please share and help us find Chapa the home she deserves
