Hi there, I'm Chipper! Whoever named me was right on, because that's my style. I'm a happy, quirky, silly fella, full of fun and ready to be your dog. Just looking at me is likely to make you smile. Being part of a family is all I've ever wanted. I'm so excited to get settled in with you, to learn my new routine, and to figure out for sure that I am finally home. Ah, that sounds so nice.
I'm an adorable, 1 year old, 53-pound sweetheart, with the softest ears, the biggest smile, and a friendly, charming, delightful personality. I'm already housebroken, as long as I get out on a regular schedule, and I know how to use a dog door too. I have experience with crate training as well. I'm not a big fan of going in my crate, but I do fine there when needed. I came to Wayside last fall as a stray. I was adopted, but things didn't work out for me there. My owner was looking for a couch potato type of dog, which I am not. I needed the time to play and exercise, which he wasn't able to give me. That's OK though! Both of us deserve a better match for our lifestyle. I hope to find that with you!
I've been through a lot of change and instability in my short life. Being back at the shelter was stressful and worrisome. Lucky for me, Foster Mom saw that I was struggling and decided to take me home with her. I was cautious about my new and strange environment at first, as I began to figure out my role as part of the family. Things like hallways and stairs and the dog door were confusing, as well as the freedom to explore the house and even the furniture. I wanted so much to fit in and to not cause any trouble! Foster Mom reminds me that I'm doing just fine. She lets me go at my own pace, which puts me at ease. I'm a sensitive soul, so please don't ever be harsh with me. I will thrive in a positive, patient, consistent environment, with plenty of praise and encouragement when I'm a good boy.
I'm very well behaved in the house and I don't bother a thing. When no one is home, I stay with the other dogs in the walk out basement area, where we have access to the fenced backyard via the dog door. I sleep downstairs at night too, either on my dog bed or in my kennel with the door open. I'm affectionate and friendly with everyone I meet. Foster Dad is my bestie. I love knowing my foster parents are nearby, frequently resting at their feet or gently placing my head in their laps for pets. I'm an easy dog to fall in love with! I'm not much of a barker either, but I whine at times.
For now, I'm mostly a homebody, content to learn my routine and hang out with the family and other visitors that stop by. I'm working on my leash skills too though. I generally walk well, but I get startled with loud noises and new surroundings, so please take things slowly with me. I prefer to walk in a quiet, familiar area without much traffic. We have a fenced yard at my foster home, and I love to spend time there. I like to trot around the yard or play chase with the other dogs or simply lounge in the shade on the back deck. The simple feeling of home makes me happy and content.
I love the three other dogs in my foster home! I'm best buddies with the 10-year-old, and I like to romp and play with the two younger dogs. I enjoy their company, and they help me feel more relaxed and confident. I'm also friendly with the cat who occasionally visits. Sometimes I can be jumpy when I get excited, so I will need to meet any children under the age of 10, to make sure we're a great match for each other. Mostly, I'm looking for a home with kind people who will love me as I am, quirks and all, and who will make me an active, engaged member of the family.
Foster Mom loves it when I flash one of my famous happy smiles at her. Her heart melts a little, knowing how much it will mean to me when I finally find my forever family. I can't wait for that day. I can't wait to be your dog.
Love, Chipper
