My Story

COURTESY POST This amazingly majestic creature is Copper. A 4-5 year old spayed, vaccinated female Rottweiler Bullmastiff mix. I'm told some of her vaccines may have lapsed, but she's current on rabies. She's approximately 94 lb and lives with a mini Chihuahua and another 30 lb mix with very few issues. She does sometimes resource guard, so the person who currently has her is making sure she keeps everyone separate and is right there whenever treats or a bones are introduced. She's never hurt another animal but she has issued a couple of warning growls over a desirable item. But more often than not the 30 lb mix that lives with her can take bones away from her so she's kind of a big old teddy bear. She's never been around cats that they know of, but when they have her out walking and she sees cats on the street she does not react like she wants to chase them. She doesn't seem to react to strange dogs either. I know there are people that love these larger breeds, I'm hoping we can find the perfect forever home for her. Copper was gotten originally as a puppy by the brother of Rita, who has her now. The brother had her for a few years, but didn't do much to train her. Rita and her brother's mom died a couple of years ago, and the brother really struggled with that life event, and just couldn't cope with being here or his responsibilities, so he gave Copper over to Rita's son. Things went along ok until the son got married, and the family moved to a place with no fenced yard. That meant all 94 lb of Copper was in the house a lot, and it put a lot of stress on the marriage. Basically the wife did not like Copper at all, and Copper went from no training and no understanding of what was expected of her, to a shock collar. It is a wonder she's still a sweet as she is. Thankfully Rita removed the collar when she got her, and as a consequence, Copper's is quite obedient and clingy. Thankfully the shock collar did not make her aggressive, which happens all too often. It did however, cause an infection that the vet mentioned in her notes so obviously she was wearing it a lot and probably being shocked frequently. Makes me sick. The wife finally gave Rita's son an ultimatum, so Rita offered to take Copper and keep her safe. Rita lives in a small trailer and with two other dogs and 94 lb Copper, so it's a lot. She doesn't feel Copper's living her best life, and not getting much of a chance to run and be a dog. I met Copper today, and she really is just a big sweetheart. Very friendly very gentle. According to Rita, she's always been a sweet and gentle giant that has been bounced around quite a bit and not always treated very well. Despite that, she seems very calm and trusting. We want to make sure she's never treated harshly ever again. Please call Rita at 970-560-4191 if you'd like to know more about this beautiful girl. There will be lots of questions and references checked. Currently in Cortez Colorado.
