My Story
This GORGEOUS girl needs an experienced owner!
Delta Dawn is VERY friendly and outgoing with new people. She will Sit if you use a firm voice, and she will take a treat pretty nicely. But, if left to her own devices, and we're not going to sugar coat this, her manners are terrible! She does a lot of jumping up on you, and she likes to try to hold on to you with her fingernails. At 75 pounds, she is a big girl and you need to be physically prepared for her energy level, too! She is a little mouthy, which is common in shepherds with poor manners. She isn't 'biting' you, she's just doing everything with her mouth open and sometimes she ends up with her mouth ON you.
BUT, LET US BE CLEAR, SHE IS NOT AGGRESSIVE! When she is jumping up or being just generally annoying, she WILL listen when you tell her to knock it off and do something else. She has just obviously never been taught the RIGHT things to do for attention so she keeps trying the WRONG things!
The perfect home for her will WANT A PROJECT, and have the energy and commitment to see it through. She is so pretty, and clearly very smart, and she needs someone to help her realize her potential. We think she could probably live with a dog-savvy cat if you took some time to steer that relationship in the right direction. We're not sure about other dogs, but, in general, we think she probably won't live with another female.
She seems friendly enough to be around kids, but not until her manners get SIGNIFICANTLY better. In the meantime, kids are probably going to end up on their butts!
THE MAIN NON-NEGOTIABLE REQUIREMENT is that a potential adopter must have a history of successful German Shepherd ownership. This means you have had a German Shepherd yourself (not your parents when you were a kid) through its entire life (or at least until the end of its life, not having given it away when it got too big, for example) and had a well mannered dog under your guidance and leadership.
Does this seem like a lot of hoops to jump through to get a dog? Good, because IT IS. But, she is one of those dogs that if we settle for anything less, the adoption will not be successful and we will have failed her. We're not willing to compromise because that's not in HER best interests.
If you think you are interested, please start the process by completing our online adoption application, which can be found on our website at www.glaas.org. We'll call you to set up a time for you to visit the shelter, and you'll be able to meet all the available dogs and puppies!
