My Story

Meet DeVito! He is a 8 month old, 30 lb, happy, sweet boy with special needs. He has a condition called hydrocephalus and will require a very special home, so keep reading to learn more! This chunk is the silliest, sweetest and most sensitive pup you will ever meet that has absolutely no idea he is any different than his doggie friends. DeVito came to the rescue from a breeder after it was noticed his head was enlarged and he was showing some neurological symptoms indicative of hydrocephalus. A lot of times with this condition, due to the fluid and pressure, their vision is affected and sometimes their hearing. DeVito has both – he has little to no vision in his right eye and little to no hearing on the right side and possibly left. Dogs with hydrocephalus must have routine and structure in everyday life – they are not a ”go with the flow” type of animal. DeVito is no different - DeVito needs a very structured home that thrives on daily routine and not swaying in that routine from day to day. Because he does need this routine and is used to his foster home routine, he will need very close monitoring (by his owners and vet team) when adopted to make sure his meds don’t need adjusted as he becomes familiar with life in a new home. With that said, DeVito takes several meds each day – an anti-seizure med, a steroid, and two meds to help with fluid production and retention, costing approximately $150 a month. These meds must be given at the prescribed time and a dose cannot be missed, ever. Because of his special needs, adopters need to be prepared for a home visit and several reference checks, including a vet reference check. DeVito has a lot of love to give in a very special way, but adopters need to fully consider all of his needs. Additionally, he is not potty trained and may never be; most likely at a minimum he will always have accidents. DeVito’s perfect home cannot have stairs and if there are fur siblings, they need to be very understanding because DeVito doesn’t understand social cues from other animals. Due to his needs for routine and structure, DeVito will do best in a home without small children. DeVito will need a committed home that understands he may require emergency and/or specialty care in the future and a family that is prepared to cover the potential costs of that. If you think you can give DeVito the forever home he deserves, you can send inquiries to our director of adoptions at [email protected] or apply to meet / adopt at www.muttmisfits.org/adoption-application DeVito is neutered, up to date on all age-appropriate vaccinations and preventatives, heart-worm negative, and micro-chipped. Adoption fee $300
