Duke

Duke's had a rough start in life. He lost his first human to mental illness and then ended up at an overcrowded shelter. His next home was neglectful to the point of abusive. He has been residing in a small kennel at a boarding facility for months and desperately needs a stable, loving home, whether it's a foster or adopter. Duke is about 2 years old and weighs around 50 lbs. We don't know his exact breed, but he is smart, playful, athletic and very loyal to his to family. Duke is housetrained, crate-trained, neutered, current on shots, and microchipped. He is very comfortable riding in the car, and has a soft mouth when taking treats. I'm a volunteer who spends hours with Duke every week, and I've seen him blossom so beautifully. Duke's true personality may not shine through at initial meeting. He's been caged up for so long that he's more likely to be a ball of energy at first and slightly wary of some people. But once he's had a chance to release a bit of that pent up energy and warm up (chicken meat goes a long way), he is affectionate, responsive, and your constant sidekick. We have been working on some commands like "sit," "wait," "shake," "down," and "stay." He's very bright, and once a bond is established, is eager to please his person. As a young dog, Duke does need regular exercise. He loves to fetch and is always happy to go on walks. He is very playful with other dogs. Duke's been overlooked for so long and deserves so much more than life has given him so far. Despite the curveballs he's been served, his spirit remains unfazed.
