My Story

Gelato- it's better than ice cream and our friend Gelato is better than your average dog! Gelato is very anxious in the shelter but very chill around her doggo friends- she would love a confident dog pal to show her the ropes! Gelato is available for adoption at ACCT Philly. You can meet her any day from 10am-6pm. Several times she backed away from me, so I sat on the edge of the kennel and gave her cheese and canned food. I let her smell my leash and finally lassoed her. She didn't pull back, but came right out once the leash was on her. She moved slowly through the aisle, tail tucked. We had a nice walk with male dog Karti who she seemed interested in but didn't engage in a full meet. She did meet female, Moon, and she engaged a bit more with her. Gelato seems to be trying to stay housetrained. She has some scabbing and dry flacky on her back, and though she is shy and nervous, she allowed me to pet her with no issue. She had minimal interest in toys - just to smell them. She was started by some of the loud noises outside. On the way inside we meet female King and Gelata was very interested in meeting her so she had a quick meet with her. Gelato is very calm with the dogs she met and might feel less anxious when she is around another dog. I had no issue returning her to her kennel. Per Staff 7/16/24: BEHAVIOR EVALUATION: KNOWN HISTORY: N/A KENNEL PRESENTATION: Gelato was nervous in kennel when approaching. She was curled up in bed and when the handler called her she looked up with hard eye contact and flinched and tried to retreat away, but the divider was shut. The handler lassoed her with the leash and she slowly exited the kennel. No issues returning. LEASH SKILLS: Pulls minimally HANDLING: We went outside as the eval room was in use. We kept the time brief because it was very hot outside. Gelato was very nervous outside and aloof in the play yard. She had soft eyes while outside. She would sniff around the yard and then come back over and stand by us with neutral body language and soft eyes. She was tolerant of all handling while outside though from both of us. She remained neutral when petting her and did not tense up at all. When stopping she would continue to stand next to us. PLAY: No interest TOYS: Perked up but would not engage Per Staff 7/14/24: Gelato is very fearful and overwhelmed by the shelter environment, but she is very sweet and gentle. I had no issues with handling her besides her dodging their leash a bit, but once she warmed up to me was very sweet and would solicit pets. She needs a slow approach due to fear but is not at all reactive or aggressive. Per Staff 7/13/24: Nervous girl but was taking treats very gently while over in dispatch.
