We are guessing at Harlequin's breed. Her paperwork says Collie from the originating shelter, but her looks and temperament indicate possible Austrailian Shepherd or Cattle Dog, or Border Collie. She will be placed in a home with other dogs in the home.
Harlequin is medium energy. She is quite lively outside, and chases one of our dogs round and around the yard. Inside, she has spurts of playfulness, but she also calms down easily. We leave her loose in the house with our dogs and cats while we’re at work, and there have been no problems. In addition to loving the dogs, she is fine with the cats. She is inquisitive in a puppyish way, but totally harmless with them.
Though a tiny bit timid at first with new people, she warms up very quickly. She listens pretty well, and will usually come to us when called when we are out in the yard. She really likes to be with her people and dog buddies.
Even though summer is nearly upon us our family can attest that Harlequin will keep you warm in bed on a cold winters night. She can snuggle with the best of them and when given the chance will dive into the middle of sleeping bodies to find a spot where she is surrounded on all sides. My husband says she has so much personality that he doubts she’s truly a dog, rather a muse in disguise.
Update 5/4/09: Harlequin is in foster care in Maine and her foster mom has been getting to know her. This beautiful young lady weighs in at 40 pounds, and she is still very puppyish at just under a year of age.
Harlequin likes people and seems generally very happy, but she just lights up when she meets other dogs. She charges right up to them to say hello and entice them to romp and play. Her foster mom hopes that a family with a dog in need of a friend will adopt Harlequin, because she LOVES to play with other canines.
She loves sinking her teeth into chew toys, and she does a great job of emptying the toy basket at her foster home several times a day. She has quite a lot of energy and will need regular opportunities for play and exercise to keep her occupied. Her house training is coming along well, and she doesn't seem to bark very much. She has not had any formal obedience training, which is not unusual for a rescue puppy.
Harlequin met kids during a brief stint in foster care in Arkansas, and our partner shelter reports that she did well with them. She should make a great family pet for an active household - preferably with a doggie friend!

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning "pending adoption".
If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.
