About Honeybee: We
got an email on a Friday afternoon, addressed to us and another rescue, asking
if there was any possibility of help for Honeybee. The email came from one
of our favorite shelters/rescue coordinators, and she didn't hold out a lot of
hope for this senior girl. She was overweight, has some arthritis, and was
owner-surrendered -- adding her age in, that's pretty much a "triple whammy",
even for this terrific shelter. So the email was a "Just in case", with
little hope of a positive response.
The rescue coordinator
was so happy when we called, saying that she assumed everybody was full, but
they simply couldn't put this girl down (which was the plan) without at least
TRYING. We are so glad she did! You see, Honeybee wasn't surrendered
for any of the usual questionable, "lame" reasons we get -- her owner was
elderly, and going to assisted living. He was devastated when he had to
surrender her, telling the shelter she'd always been a good dog. She is
safe with cats, as (sadly) she was surrendered along with her feline companion.
If you look at our site you can see we have a true soft spot for the seniors,
and after hearing about Honeybee we just KNEW that there was someone out there
who would see what a precious girl she is, and how deserving she is of a chance
to live out her life in comfort, and loved.
This shelter uses SAFER temperament testing,
and Honeybee passed every phase of it with flying colors. When she went
through the SAFER testing, the dog portion of the test was conducted with
another female of similar size. In addition, Honeybee is the rare Malamute
who is fine with same-gender dogs -- she's been kenneled with another female
with no problem whatsoever! She has been fine with every dog she's met at
the shelter.
Honeybee's owner said that she is 8 years old, and she has
been a house dog her whole life. She has never been crated, was given the
run of the house, and has lived with up to 3 cats at a time. He said she
has been known to bark at other dogs, though the shelter has not seen this at
ALL. Honeybee has been loved her whole life, and is a gentle, laid back
girl. She needs to lose some weight, which will also help her mobility.
We will be putting Honeybee on holistic therapies to help with her stiffness.
We prefer to think of "senior" dogs as SEASONED dogs! There are simply no
words to describe the many, many qualities that make senior dogs such loving,
therapeutic companions. They are way past the puppy phase, generally have
learned wonderful house manners, and have given a lifetime of love and devotion
to a family. They have a depth of character that
younger dogs simply haven't had time to acquire. A senior dog truly
understands when you've given her a second chance, and we guarantee you will
feel the genuine love and gratitude that radiates from her when you open your
home to provide her with a place to enjoy those golden years. Her needs
are simple -- a loving hand, a gentle voice, a warm room to sleep in, a food
bowl that's always available, and a soft place to lay their head. Honeybee will make a great friend
someone
looking for a gentle companion to share walks through the falling autumn leaves,
long winter nights beside you on the couch, in front of a roaring fire, the
first buds of spring, and fireflies in the summer.
The LATEST: We had Honeybee at our recent Petco event, and
everybody who met her fell in love with her! She is just the sweetest
thing. When I sat down to take her first set of photos, she got up slowly,
walked up to me, and buried her head, nose down, on my chest, wanted to be
hugged and kissed. She ADORES attention, pets and affection.
Honeybee did fine with the other dogs at Petco, and even seemed to have kind of
a crush on handsome Traynor. :) However, when she arrived at her
foster home, she showed some aggression to the other dogs there. We don't
know if she was tired, or cranky after her long day, or whether she just wants
to be an only dog when a home setting is involved, after being her human dad's
"princess". This foster home already has another foster dog, so we had to
send poor Honeybee to the kennel, where we will continue to evaluate her
In boarding, Honeybee is surprisingly perky for her size. We have her on a
diet in hopes of getting some weight off of her. We were going to try a
little pain medication for the arthritis, but our rescue partner said she's not
seeing any signs of pain. At the kennel, she is trotting around and
showing interest in the other dogs (not in an aggressive way). We WILL be
starting her on a joint supplement, though, to make her more comfortable.
We do our best, but we don't always get the
updates up as quickly as we'd like, and there's often new information that isn't
yet posted. If you are interested in Honeybee, please

Updates:
Check back soon or SEND AN EMAIL
to request more information and/or an adoption application. This
dog's adoption donation is $200. If you know how much it costs to give a new dog responsible vet care, you can easily see that this is quite a bargain!
This dog has had a complete health exam, has already been altered (spayed or
neutered), is microchipped, has tested negative for heartworm, has been kept on heartworm and flea preventative, is fully vaccinated and free of parasites.
What to do if you want to
adopt this dog: Just SEND AN EMAIL to request an adoption application!
We will review your application to determine if there is a good match
between your family and this dog. We may suggest another if we can offer a
better fit in terms of lifestyle, experience, other pets, etc. A vet check, reference checks, and a home visit will be conducted before an adoption can be considered for approval.
NOTE:
In the vast majority of cases, the dogs in our program are rescued from
shelters, and Northern Lights has no means by which to collect or verify a dog's
history. We work in concert with our veterinarians, and breed and age
estimates are based on a combination of professional input and our collective
experience. Our policy with information acquired while the dogs are in our
care is that of "full disclosure". It is our goal to ensure the
adopter has all available information to ensure the best possible match between
the dog and the adopting person or family. In some instances, because of
applicant interest, dogs are in our program for relatively brief periods of
time. If we have identified a temperament or health condition while
the dog is in our care and custody, every effort will be made to correct it prior to
adoption OR the adopter will be made aware of the
issue or condition prior to adoption. Northern Lights' screening process
is designed to select only adopters who are willing, and have the means, to
treat conditions which may occur after adoption, and adopter will be
contractually responsible for doing so.
NORTHERN
LIGHTS IS NOT A SHELTER. We are a rescue comprised of individuals who open their private homes to
foster dogs in need of a second chance.
