About JARVIS*:  A post began circulating among the rescue network way back before Christmas that broke our hearts.  Describing the plight of a dog in peril in Kentucky, it read:  "Jarvis is a 8 year old neutered male Husky in serious need of a rescue.  His family is losing their home.  To make it worse, the boy in Jarvis' family used to volunteer at our local humane society.  He knows that our animal shelter euthanizes two times a week, and he recognizes that Jarvis (being a large, older dog) won't stand a chance there.  They keep the strays for five days, but their is no requirement to hold owners surrenders.  Also, incredibly, the shelter is not open for adoptions either!  The family is willing to keep him until rescue is found, but they are running out of time."  We responded to the post and agreed to try to help Jarvis, and stayed in touch with his advocate from that point forward.  This week, however, was finally THE WEEK:  Jarvis' time ran out, and he was shelter-bound by the weekend.  Luckily he had some Kentucky angels on his side, and they immediately arranged to get him to Indianapolis, where we were thrilled to meet a gorgeous boy with a sunny disposition!

We did later learn that at his last home (the home being foreclosed upon) Jarvis had a lonely life when the boy wasn't home.  He was tied out with only a 3-sided "lean-to" for shelter.  Money must've been too tight to feed Jarvis much.  It's apparent that he has gone hungry a good deal of the time, without enough to eat -- he is TERRIBLY underweight.  We've (unfortunately) seen all too many starved Huskies come through our program, but the person who took him in for the night said that Jarvis is one of the skinniest Huskies she has ever seen, describing him as "nothing but a bag of bones".  Thankfully, though, that's a reversible condition and Jarvis had a great appetite for FOOD as well as a great zest for life! :)

During the intake process, we learned that this most recent home was at very least his second home ... this family took him in when the previous owner was giving him away because he "went after some of their chickens".  Jarvis is a real family dog and absolutely ADORES people of all ages.  He's never met a stranger!  As touched upon earlier, his family had two kids, ages 4 and 15 -- and he was just crazy about them!  In fact, being outside and playing with the kids -- particularly '"his boy", the 15 year old, is Jarvis' favorite thing of all!  This handsome guy is good with other dogs, and the family reported that he's also good with cats.  They said that he did, on occasion, want to play with the cat, but apparently Kitty would have none of that!  :)

According to the owners, Jarvis has great manners!  He is housebroken, crate-trained, and easily contained by a 4' fence.  Though he's just arrived and we haven't confirmed it, he is said to know SIT, STAY and COME.  His advocate affectionately added that he could use a little bit of leash work, as he gets very excited to go out on any adventure and does some Husky pulling to begin with.  They reiterated what a great family dog Jarvis is, and how much he LOVES to be with people.  He also loves to be groomed!

The woman who drove Jarvis to Indy reported that she didn't crate him for transport and and he rode nicely -- except for wanting to crawl into her lap to be close to her!  :)

Update:  Our volunteer took Jarvis in and kept him for a "sleep-over" at her house before he went in for his vetting.  She wrote:  "I  picked Jarvis up today from a lovely lady who was willing to give him a ride to us from Kentucky.  She said that when she got him from his previous owner, he was left outside tied to a pole in the backyard - this is where he had been left for the last six months!  When we pulled him out of her car, I went to pet him and felt NOTHING but bones.  If he didn't have such a thick coat, you could easily give an anatomy lesson off his body -- I can even feel the bones on his skull.  :(

But while his body might be starved, his spirit is healthy and strong.  When I walked him over to my car, he hopped right in where he laid down in my back seat and stayed there quietly during the drive.  Once one, I let him outside to potty and enjoy being out of the car.  He was both hungry and thirsty, and refueled with enthusiasm!  He is definitely a kissy boy -- loves to give kisses, and plenty of them!  :)

I spaced out the introductions to my dogs.  He met my oldest and they started playing right away -- he certainly didn't act like an 8 year old!  He play bowed, howled,  barked and bounced around to show off to my girl!  He then met my puppy - a good-sized pup who pawed at his head, bit his neck and did all the annoying things puppies do to adult dogs.  Jarvis couldn't have cared less -- he didn't care. He clearly was just happy to be getting attention!  Next, he met my (human) kids and -- no shock here --- he loved them just as much!

Jarvis is just a great boy with a lot of personality.  He knows SIT and SHAKE, and is a talker -- he'll definitely talk back to you when you speak to him!  Once we get some weight on him, he will surely go from handsome to STUNNING!  Whomever is lucky enough to adopt Jarvis will be getting one special boy!"

Jarvis also did GREAT at our Petco day.  He is a delight -- wagging and wagging and smiling, eyes alight, to show his utter joy at being with people and getting attention.  He did GREAT with all of the other dogs.  We were in LOVE, and you will be, too, if you give him a chance!

*NOTE:  Jarvis' name is "Jack" He knows and responds to Jack, which is what we are calling him in practice.  However, beecause we have had a number of dogs named Jack, and variations on the name, we are listing him as "Jarvis" (kind of like a Rescue ID).

Due to a lack of foster homes, we had to place JARVIS  with our rescue partner at the paid boarding kennel in order to save his life.  Without boarding, he'd have died in the shelter.  If you can't adopt, you can still help JARVIS by contributing toward his 'room and board'.  Please see more info on how to donate, below!

Though we do our best, we don't always get the updates up as quickly as we'd like, and there's often new information that isn't yet posted.  If you are interested in JARVIS,  please EMAIL US to request more information and/or an adoption application.

This dog's adoption donation is $200. If you know how much it costs to give a new dog responsible vet care, you can easily see that this is quite a bargain! This dog has had a complete health exam, has already been altered (spayed or neutered), is microchipped, has tested negative for heartworm, has been kept on heartworm and flea preventative, is fully vaccinated and free of parasites.

What to do if you want to adopt this dog: Just SEND AN EMAIL to request an adoption application! We will review your application to determine if there is a good match between your family and this dog.  We may suggest another if we can offer a better fit in terms of lifestyle, experience, other pets, etc. A vet check, reference checks, and a home visit will be conducted before an adoption can be considered for approval.

NOTE:   In the vast majority of cases, the dogs in our program are rescued from shelters, and Northern Lights has no means by which to collect or verify a dog's history.  We work in concert with our veterinarians, and breed and age estimates are based on a combination of professional input and our collective experience.  Our policy with information acquired while the dogs are in our care is that of "full disclosure".  It is our goal to ensure the adopter has all available information to ensure the best possible match between the dog and the adopting person or family.  In some instances, because of applicant interest, dogs are in our program for relatively brief periods of time.  If we have identified a temperament or health condition while the dog is in our care and custody, every effort will be made to correct it prior to adoption OR the adopter will be made aware of the issue or condition prior to adoption.  Northern Lights' screening process is designed to select only adopters who are willing, and have the means, to treat conditions which may occur after adoption, and adopter will be contractually responsible for doing so.

NORTHERN LIGHTS IS NOT A SHELTER. We are a rescue comprised of individuals who open their private homes to foster dogs in need of a second chance.  IF YOU WOULD LIKE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT HOW YOU CAN SAVE A LIFE BY FOSTERING FOR NORTHERN LIGHTS, EMAIL US FOR INFO AND AN APPLICATION!   For answers to FAQ regarding who we are, as well as our adoption policies and practices, please VISIT OUR PETFINDER HOME PAGE.
