Junebug is a lovebug! She was rescued from the Lake County Animal Shelter. She had been there for over 6 weeks and yet emerged full of happiness, good-nature, and joy.
Junebug is estimated to be about a year old and is a short & stocky 70 lbs. She looks to be mostly lab, but given her stocky frame, probably has a sprinkling of other breeds in her as well. Hooch from the movie Turner & Hooch comes to mind, so maybe there's a bit of mastiff in there. She moves with the slight clumsy gangliness of puppyhood so it's possible she is still in her growing stage.
Junebug was found as a stray and spent over a month in the shelter. That this extremely lovable dog could be overlooked for so long by potential adopters is almost tragic. We've only had her for a short while and already we feel blessed that she stepped into our lives.
Junebug passed her temperament test at the shelter with flying colors. She was deemed good with other dogs, children, and even cats with supervision. From what we've seen of her so far, we have found her to be friendly, well-socialized, active and playful but not hyper, submissive, and simply a sweetheart. She hasn't fully outgrown her chewing phase so shoes, beware!, but that's about the only bad habit we've noticed with her so far. Even then, she's not an excessive chewer, and I think lack of exercise contributes mostly to that habit.
Junebug rides quietly in the car. She doesn't pull on leash and has stuck close when off-leash while on the trail, although she doesn't seem to have any concept of "coming" unless she is following another dog. She knows "sit" but doesn't appear to have had any formal training. She seems eager to please and would do great in a training class.
Junebug is definitely a follower and is the kind of dog who follows in the steps of another dog so she'd make a great companion for another canine.
Junebug likes to play with other dogs and with her toys, but she's also able to settle down quietly in the house. In fact, I would classify her as a low-energy dog. She 'll need walks and maybe the occasional visit to a dog park, but her activity level is not high. She would NOT make a good jogging or hiking partner. Junebug is crate-trained and currently sleeps in her crate at night and when nobody is home. She is also housetrained and has never had an accident inside the house since we've had her.
The ideal guardian(s) for Junebug will act as a leader to her. Of course we want her to be loved like a member of the family, but it is also important that boundaries and discipline are reinforced so that she understands what is expected of her. She's such a naturally good girl that it would be tragic if she got out of hand simply due to lack of proper guidance.
There is a simple joy about Junebug that will have her crawling into your heart in no time. She's full of sunshine and you'll see your whole life light up with her in it.
Junebug will be spayed, current on shots, microchipped, and current on flea & tick and heartworm preventative prior to adoption. She will not be available for adoption until after she is spayed in August, but you are welcome to email your Adoption Application. JUNEBUG IS BEING FOSTERED IN ANTIOCH. There is a $225 tax-deductible adoption fee, which will help to cover a portion of Junebug's medical expenses. For an additional $50, we will also provide a doggie starter package, which includes a crate, bed, ceramic food & water bowls, toys, kong, shampoo, leash, collar, and a 20% off coupon good at Pet Food Express. A homecheck will also be required to ensure that she goes to an environment suited to her.
