23 JANUARY 2006 UPDATE
I ran Junior a couple days ago. I took 4 dogs and the 4-wheeler and went 9 miles. There is little snow and the trail is rough, so we went about 5 mph. I was impressed with Junior: he is an old pro. He stood calmly when he was hitched and whenever we stopped. I needed to cut some stumps out of the trail, but forgot the saw and had to go back for it. Junior was obviously puzzled when we turned around after having hardly started, but he didn’t argue. He has a decent trot; he paced some at the end, when he was tired. On a smooth uphill stretch, I tried his speed: he could trot until 12-13 mph, then broke into a lope. Even when tired, he was a steady puller. When I stopped to cut the stumps, the dog next to Junior tied the team in a knot. Junior remained calm and let me untangle him; he didn’t chew harness or lines. I stopped several more times to cut leaning trees, and Junior was calm and stayed still each time. On the way back, I put him in lead (no neckline). He was unsure but willing, and kept a tight line. By the time we got home, he’d learned to cue off the other leader at turns. What a nice dog!
2 JUNE 2005:
Junior is a trained sled dog. His previous owner says he is 5 years old and ran in the 2005 Serum Run. He says Junior currently runs at 8-10 mph and is a good team dog. Junior is an active boy. He is quite friendly and outgoing, loves people and is fine with other dogs. Junior is good in a car. Unknown with children and cats, but kids should be ok. A nice boy.
Junior went mushing with our volunteers on April 27th, running in a 6-dog team:
"Junior did very well on this run. He is a nice 55 pound male with a nice trot, and is a good focused worker. He is easy to handle and good with other dogs. Junior would be an awesome addition to a distance or rec team. Junior is a taller lanky male who mostly wanted to trot."
