About KARLOFF:  Karloff is new to our program, having come to us from a shelter in Michigan we've worked with several times before. Our contact there reports handsome Karloff was found wandering in the apple orchards. He is a mature boy -- a mellow, gentle fellow who still has a lot of life and love to give!

She wrote the following: "This gorgeous boy has a wonderful temperament! He seems to get along with everybody he meets, whether that's a person or another dog!  He appears to have been outside for some period of time as the tips of his ears have been chewed up by flies. Other than that, though, he appears to be healthy and is in good condition. Despite the fact that he maybe have been stuck outside, he must've been a house dog at some point in his life. This is apparent from the fact that he loves the car and does great in it ... and he also has no trouble being in a crate! I hope he finds a special place to call home -- he definitely deserves it!"

Karloff was found to be HW positive, and has been treated. It hit him hard the first couple of days, but he bounced back pretty quickly. He is good as new and SO ready for a forever home of his own!

KARLOFF's Temporary Foster Mom Says: Karloff is a beautiful black and white male with the most striking blue eyes. He appears to be around 6 or 7 years old and has a very calm, sweet personality. He has wonderful house manners and does well in a crate. He is completely housebroken. He loves anyone who will give him belly rubs and head scratches. He is very friendly and easy going with everyone he meets, and he gets along great with other dogs. Karloff is a very gentle, undemanding dog who is just so happy and content to be near people who love and care for him. He goes to the door when he wants go go out. He has the run of the house during the day, and is gated in the kitchen at night. As you can see from his photos, he does great with kids, even 5 year old Heather, who was visiting us. The only "problem" we have seen in Karloff is something very common to Huskies, and that is a high prey drive. He is not to be trusted with cats or small dogs. Otherwise, this sweet boy will be a great addition to any family.

THE LATEST:  Karloff went into a new foster home after a long break in boarding, and the only thing that would make him happier now is a FOREVER home of his own.  His new foster dad took a shine to him during visits to the kennel, when space opened up at his house (he needs a nice dog who will be gentle with his foster mom, and good with his dogs) he was happy to open his home to him.

After a recent visit to the kennel, he wrote:  "It is so heartwarming to see how well Karloff is doing!  I still remember him having difficulty last fall after Petco, and how worried we all were about him.  At that time, I took him to the vet for his heartworm test.  When the technician drew his blood for his heart worm test, it was hard for her to get a good sample.  Karloff's blood was so affected by his heart worm infestation that it was like dark red cottage cheese. Still, his health problem did not dampen Karloff's spirits.  This guy's a fighter and just has a calm, steady determination and sweetness about him that melts your heart.

Now, Karloff is a very healthy guy -- he looks like a totally different dog. His eyes are bright, he looks alert and his coat is nothing short of magnificent!  He displayed good energy  as we took a long walk through the woods and along a river. He enjoyed being out of the boarding kennel and was really happy to have things to sniff.  Walking with Axel (prior to Axel getting into foster) he provided guidance and a good example to another dog that is very much in need of positive things in his life.  While Karloff is a little bit older than some of our other dogs, he has a great energy, a happy spirit and lots of love to share. Karloff will make someone a fantastic companion. I hope someone will give him a forever home soon!

His latest report, after Karloff's arrival in foster, was more good news:  "Karloff has begun eating an early meal, which I think is a response to the increased exercise he is getting on our hikes with my pack.  He is doing well with my dogs.  He clearly defers to Siku, but will protest if he thinks Siku is being overbearing.  Also, he is friendly with Kardjuk, but they do not play, as I think Kardjuk is just a little much for him.  My boys will begin singing as soon as they hear me getting the harness together and putting on the waist belt with their leashes.  I'm happy to report that Karloff has been joining them the last few days!  Karloff also has the harnessing and harness removal drill down pat. He has his harness removed first and put on last. When we get ready to go out, he waits in his spot until it is his turn to get his harness. When we come back from our walks, he goes to his spot, waits while I secure the gate and then gets his harness removed.  Karloff is very manageable on our walks and clearly enjoys them. He regularly joins Kardjuk in group sniffs. In the past few days, Siku has begun accepting Karloff as part of a group sniff, whereas he had woofed him away before.

Karloff enjoys coming in the house and has good manners indoors. He enjoys his affection, but is not overbearing about getting it. He will just sit and look at me, as if he is saying "please pet me".  While he is an older dog, Karloff has shown that he is enthusiastic about life and still has a lot of mileage left in him.  Somebody is going to be very, very luck to have the companionship of this WONDERFUL dog!

This dog's adoption donation is $200. If you know how much it costs to give a new dog responsible vet care, you can easily see that this is quite a bargain! This dog has had a complete health exam, has already been altered (spayed or neutered), is microchipped, has tested negative for heartworm, has been kept on heartworm and flea preventative, is fully vaccinated and free of parasites.

What to do if you want to adopt this dog: Just SEND AN EMAIL to request an adoption application! We will review your application to determine if there is a good match between your family and this dog. We may suggest another if we can offer a better fit in terms of lifestyle, experience, other pets, etc. A vet check, reference checks, and a home visit will be conducted before an adoption can be considered for approval.

NOTE: In the vast majority of cases, the dogs in our program are rescued from shelters, and Northern Lights has no means by which to collect or verify a dog's history. We work in concert with our veterinarians, and breed and age estimates are based on a combination of professional input and our collective experience. Our policy with information acquired while the dogs are in our care is that of "full disclosure". It is our goal to ensure the adopter has all available information to ensure the best possible match between the dog and the adopting person or family. In some instances, because of applicant interest, dogs are in our program for relatively brief periods of time. If we have identified a temperament or health condition while the dog is in our care and custody, every effort will be made to correct it prior to adoption OR the adopter will be made aware of the issue or condition prior to adoption. Northern Lights' screening process is designed to select only adopters who are willing, and have the means, to treat conditions which may occur after adoption, and adopter will be contractually responsible for doing so.

NORTHERN LIGHTS IS NOT A SHELTER. We are a rescue comprised of individuals who open their private homes to foster dogs in need of a second chance. IF YOU WOULD LIKE MORE INFORMATION ABOUT HOW YOU CAN SAVE A LIFE BY FOSTERING FOR NORTHERN LIGHTS, EMAIL US FOR INFO AND AN APPLICATION!
