Adopted 4/10/10 @ HW Feed Poplar Ave
Kelsey is an adorable 9 year old shaggy Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen who came to us via the Monroeville, AL Animal Shelter.
He was dropped off unceremoniously at the shelter in the middle of the night with all his vet history where he had been boarded, groomed, and vetted. His note just said
We can't keep Kelsey any longer. He is neutered, house-trained, 9 years old. The last entry on the vet records was December 28, 2009 for a checkup and bordetella vaccine. Since Kelsey has been in foster care we have learned a lot more about him. He is housetrained and likes other dogs. He does not travel well in a car but he does fine if another dog he knows rides with him and lays down beside him. Kelsey has done well in my home without crating, but he has other dogs who accept him into the pack and he is never alone. He does suffer separation anxiety if alone without humans even in the presence of other dogs if they have not accepted him.
We tried moving him to a foster home with only two dogs. Those dogs never
bonded with him and the first day the humans went to work, Kelsey reverted to a severe separation anxiety dog. He is currently back in the original foster home where he is happy as part of a pack even when I go to work. Kelsey is a happy and loving dog who acts more like a 2 y.o. than a 9 y.o. fellow.
This is my first experience with this breed and he is quite endearing.
Kelsey made the long trip from Alabama to Memphis and is now ready for his new home. He weighs 24 pounds, is housetrained and heartworm negative. Kelsey is a very friendly dog and gets along well with others.

We adopt dogs from Memphis Animal Shelter when we can. The shelter has an 83% euthanasia rate, one of the highest in the country. Unfortunately, any dog coming from Memphis Animal Shelter, and most other shelters for that matter, will have been in contact with contagious illness. Even though the dogs have been in foster care and appear to be in good health, they may become stressed when changing environments and exhibit signs and symptoms of illness. If you have other pets, they need to be up to date on vaccines before bringing a shelter dog into your home. We will take the adopted animal back, but we are not responsible for your other animal's vet care. We always disclose where the dogs have come from. Please ask for any information about the dogs and exercise due caution if you have immunocompromised animals.
