My Story

Kroger is one of the sweetest dogs you will ever meet, He's about 2 1/2 years old, and spent most of last year, so half of his young life, in a Southern California high kill shelter. He was adopted and returned once, no reason given as to why. Journey Home saw him, and here he is in Missouri. Kroger does not know a stranger. Not a guard dog, for sure! He's loves kids, even when they hug his neck. He stands and watches the neighborhood kids running around, riding bikes and scooters, and he just waits for them to pass by to give him love. He is solid and chill when he meets other dogs. He tailors his play style to the friends around him He plays with a 6 pound Maltese and a 120 pound King Shepherd!! He's also happy to lay around and nap with the lazy dogs! Kroger is very food motivated and eager to please. He's a leaner, not a jumper. He is working on his separation anxiety, and he would do best in a home where he's not left alone all day and had a dog sibling to keep him company. When he arrived in his foster home, we learned he has seizures. We are heartbroken at the thought that he was likely having them in the shelter, and no one knew. We had a visit to the ER vet late one night when the seizures would not stop. We then followed up with the vet to run bloodwork and determine there was not an underlying condition causing the seizures. Sadly, Kroger had a lengthy episode several weeks later, and spent 4 days in the hospital trying to get the seizures under control. We followed up with a neurologist and had an MRI and spinal fluid testing done. No neurological deficits or systemic disease/infection detected. Final diagnosis is Idiopathic Epilepsy. He is on daily anti-seizure meds, and likely will be the rest of his life. Epilepsy is very manageable! We are working on getting his med dosage correct, and changing up his diet to give him the best nutritional support we can. Breakthrough seizures can, and will, happen occasionally. This is something anyone interested in adopting Kroger must take to heart before pursuing an application. Kroger is amazing! He is currently fostered in the St. Louis area.
