Kya

Kya is a 3-4 year old Kelpie mix who was once a stray, weighing around 34 lbs. Despite our best efforts to reunite her with her original family, Kya remained unclaimed, and now she's looking for a loving forever home. She has been on an inexpensive antianxiety medication to help her with her initial timidness, although we believe with time and confidence-building, she can eventually transition off this medication. Kya is a sweetheart, albeit quite shy at first. Her coping mechanism when faced with new experiences is to freeze, which is why we've been using medication to help her ease into things until she realizes they're safe. Over the past few months, she's made remarkable progress, especially in discovering the joys of walks and the comfort of a loving home environment. She's a low-maintenance companion who enjoys lounging on the bed for most of the day. Kya is housetrained and crate trained, with her crate serving as her safe haven. Given her background, she's extra food motivated and prefers a slow feeder bowl to enjoy her meals peacefully. Due to her enthusiasm for treats, we recommend a home without small children. Kya gets along well with other dogs but requires slow introductions. It took her about a month to feel comfortable around my two male dogs, and now they nap together peacefully. She's also fond of chewing Nylabones and occasionally the edges of blankets, though she's generally not destructive. Storms are a source of terror for Kya, so a patient and understanding owner who can help her through these moments is essential. She's a quiet girl who prefers grunting for attention over barking and craves affection and pets. While she's undecided about brushing, she's generally cooperative once she feels secure. Kya is heartworm negative, spayed, up to date on all vaccinations, and receives monthly heartworm and flea preventatives.
