THANK YOU for everyone who has helped to sponsor Lady's treatment!!! Lady's has received her heartworm treatment and is doing GREAT!!!!!! She will be adopted very soon and will hopefully go to her forever home in about a month!! 4/4/07
Update from Lady's foster mom 4/8/07
Lady is just beautiful with long toffee colored hair that parts down her back. She has just a little greying at the ends of the short hairs around her face/eyes, which when she looks up at you sometimes her face takes on this owlish look. So hard to resist! She is about 15 pounds, and is slightly overweight. We believe she is 3-5 years old, appx, but are not certain. She looks to me to be somewhat of a cross between a pekenese, a pomeranian, or some other kind of long haired chiuachiua type mix. She has the shortened flatnosed face, and you can hear her breathing because of it. She has a very sweet personality, and because she is not a young puppy anymore she is completely housebroken. We guestimated that she is maybe 4 or 5 years old. I suspect that she could have been an inside dog before, and I think that she would prefer that lifestyle again. She is not the most active dog, she likes to lay around and sleep. She does play some though, and could enjoy an occasional stroll but with her short legs might have to take the walks at a pace she can handle. She also seems to be kennel trained and leash trained. Well suited for most family lifestyles, but she might need to be watched a little closely with young children, but for the most part has a laid back personality. She tends to want to be dominant in certain situations or with certain things or people, and at times wants to be a little treat/food/her things possessive. This is a VERY mild case though. I think that she would be great with a family with older children or even an elderly couple who wants minimal care companionship. Very easy to please, all she wants to do is be with you and follow you around. She just loves human companionship! She gets along well with cats, and with other dogs although she tends to want to be the dominant one. She will be a very loyal pet to her new family and will love them well. One of her quirks is to stand or lay just at or under the chair you are sitting in and beg you to rub her belly or chest or back or whatever part of her body is in reach with your foot while you are sitting still - constantly. She loves for you to hold her chin and scratch her head too. I think she would really enjoy riding in the car with her family when they are on errands too. Her health is improving greatly and seems to be really recovering from her heartworm treatment in great strides. Really doesn't like taking pills, and I have had to become creative in giving them to her. The latest trick I've used is to smush the pill in a small piece of cheese. It is working so far! It might not be a bad idea to pay attention to how much and when she eats. She tends to be a bit of a picky eater. She does like to beg quietly (aka sit at your feet and stare at you while you eat) for people food and just loves moist dog treats and bones. We are really going to miss her when she gets her new family, but we are really praying for a great new family to love this sweet little "Lady". The word/name Lady really does seem to suit her - such a sweet loving personality. Very well behaved, very intelligent, and very much wants to be a constant companion with her family. LADY NEEDS A SPONSOR!
Lady was surrendered by her owner in February, and has tested positive for heartworms. Poor lady!! She is a SWEET girl and has lived inside her whole life. We don't know why her owner surrendered her -- most likely, the owner found out she had heartworms (and didn't keep her on heartworm preventative) and didn't want to deal with it.
Lady is so sweet that we won't give up on her! We are looking for donations to help pay for her treatment. Her treatment will cost less than $200. If you can help, please go to http://www.almosthomerescue.net/id4.html and send in an donation -- -or email me at [email protected] for more info.
THANK YOU!!!! She will be available for adoption in three months when she is done with treatment and healthy, so please also send in an application if you would like to be considered for this sweet girl.
Please apply quickly, time IS of the essence.
All known information is listed here. If it is not listed here, then we do not know if this animal is good with cats or kids. Before sending an inquiry, please read the How To Adopt Page & FAQ pages of our website. http:www.almosthomerescue.net. This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending. For PUPPIES: SEE BELOW
This dog is Urgent because the shelter it is in is in Arkansas and is overfull, therefore dogs and puppies alike are on the euthanasia list. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us nasty letters about why we euthanize, this is not our choice, we do not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many of them as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.
HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:
FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.
CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.
SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.
SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO ALOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.
HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS ALOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVILENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.
PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!
