Letter from Senior Dog
There are many, many older dogs in shelters, just like me, that are sadly, constantly overlooked in favour of the youngsters.
There’s no getting away from it – the puppies are delightful – they’re playful, cuddly exuberant, full of energy and fun, NOT house-trained and possibly destructive! They are definitely not the right choice for everyone. We ‘older ones’ may be slowing down, observing rather than doing but, don’t you think there is definitely something good about having a calm, and dignified presence in the house. Can you imagine, the confusion and grief dogs like me feel, when brought into a shelter in the sundown of our life after having given a lifetime of love and devotion to our human family. It is of no consolation that the reasons may be genuine and unavoidable. We really are not able to comprehend the reason; we just know we feel total abandonment. And yet through this we will bear no malice to you humans, and just wait patiently for a new family to give our love to again. Us, seniors usually prove to be clean in the house; we are a pleasure to take on relaxing walks, have knowledge of at least basic commands and can safely be left for short periods of time without becoming destructive.. Because of this we can be perfect choice for 1st time families, older people or the more sedate of you who find walking in the cold and wet for hours on end a chore not a pleasure. Of course, anyone taking on one of us older dogs, can face heart-break sooner, but you will also have the absolute reward of knowing you have given the great gift of hope, love, comfort and companionship in the twilight of a dogs life. When taking on an oldie, you will have shown the great unselfish act of understanding it is not the quantity of time you have with us, it is actually the quality of that time left that matters to us. . Whichever dog at whatever age you choose, you can be sure that with your patience and kindness your new friend will become a wonderful and loving companion…...But, Please do consider opening your heart and home to one of us wonderful seniors –Remember old age is not an illness it is an inevitable fact of life!!
I want someone to show me love and take care of me unconditionally as I grow older , just as you will, for You too will grow old one day!
Love
Levi, Senior dog
