My Story

My name is Levi and I'm 11 years old. I am making my way to rescue this coming weekend (10/4) so my foster family will have more updates on me, but the family that's fostering me in AL had this to say about me: "Honestly, I think he is just about the most perfect dog. I had him out the other day with two 10 week old lab pups and he was licking them and wagging his tail. He has been fine with the other dogs. He travels great in the car. No need to crate. He just lays down and chills till you get where you are going. I haven’t had him around cats but I just can’t see him fussing over them. He is super sweet. The only time he get fussy (and it is cute) is at feeding time. He will bark at you like “hurry up!” he has never, never messed inside and I have seen him hold it so long that once I took him outside, he would pee on the first blade of grass he saw. I get so angry and can really get on my soap box at anyone that could turn such a loving and wonderful old gentleman in to the pound in the golden days of his life. " Please give me a home to live the rest of my days. I promise that in return you will have the most loyal and loving friend.

Letter from Senior Dog

There are many, many older dogs in shelters, just like me, that are sadly, constantly overlooked in favour of the youngsters.

There’s no getting away from it – the puppies are delightful – they’re playful, cuddly exuberant, full of energy and fun, NOT house-trained and possibly destructive! They are definitely not the right choice for everyone. We ‘older ones’ may be slowing down, observing rather than doing but, don’t you think there is definitely something good about having a calm, and dignified presence in the house. Can you imagine, the confusion and grief dogs like me feel, when brought into a shelter in the sundown of our life after having given a lifetime of love and devotion to our human family. It is of no consolation that the reasons may be genuine and unavoidable. We really are not able to comprehend the reason; we just know we feel total abandonment. And yet through this we will bear no malice to you humans, and just wait patiently for a new family to give our love to again. Us, seniors usually prove to be clean in the house; we are a pleasure to take on relaxing walks, have knowledge of at least basic commands and can safely be left for short periods of time without becoming destructive.. Because of this we can be perfect choice for 1st time families, older people or the more sedate of you who find walking in the cold and wet for hours on end a chore not a pleasure. Of course, anyone taking on one of us older dogs, can face heart-break sooner, but you will also have the absolute reward of knowing you have given the great gift of hope, love, comfort and companionship in the twilight of a dogs life. When taking on an oldie, you will have shown the great unselfish act of understanding it is not the quantity of time you have with us, it is actually the quality of that time left that matters to us. . Whichever dog at whatever age you choose, you can be sure that with your patience and kindness your new friend will become a wonderful and loving companion…...But, Please do consider opening your heart and home to one of us wonderful seniors –Remember old age is not an illness it is an inevitable fact of life!!

I want someone to show me love and take care of me unconditionally as I grow older , just as you will, for You too will grow old one day!

Love

Levi, Senior dog
