My Story

Meet Lizzie! This adorable girl has been waiting months for a family and wants nothing more than her happy ending. Lizzie is around 4.5 months old and currently weighs between 26 and 30 lbs. While we’re not sure how big she will get when fully grown, we suspect she’ll be at least 50 lbs, possibly more. Without a DNA test, we cannot confirm her breed, but she has some features that resemble a Rottie mix—but who knows? Lizzie's start in life was rough. She and her littermates were left in a box and abandoned at a rural shelter in Texas. The staff found them, estimated them to be around 3 weeks old, and quickly placed them into foster care where they were bottle-fed. Lizzie is currently thriving in foster care, and here are some notes from her foster mom: “Lizzie has lived with other dogs, cats, and older kids. She needs redirection with the cats as she likes to play rougher than they do. I’m not sure how she would do with small children. I received Lizzie from her previous foster in April. She was really mouthy, which has gotten better, but she still does it when she gets excited. She also likes to jump/hop around and will jump on people, which we are also working on. Lizzie doesn’t like to be outside by herself. I will go out with her or pair her with another of my dogs. She likes to stay outside longer if she has another dog to play with, and did so when I had other puppies in foster. Now I only have adults, and they prefer to lay in the sun, so she wants to come inside quickly. Grooming – She does well when receiving a bath but hates when I try to cut her nails. She also hates being restrained to have her nails cut. I purchased a puzzle/toy that has a large emery board on it. She has to scratch at it to turn, and I put her food in it. This will wear her nails down without the drama of cutting them. I am also working with her on grinding her nails, but she isn’t there yet. Training – We are currently working on leash training and basic commands, which she is picking up quickly. She is motivated by food and toys, so she is easy to teach. The only time she really doesn’t listen is when she is off-leash and excited. Current commands being worked on: sit, stay, down, look at me, touch, up, down, and under. Kennel Training – Lizzie will stay in her kennel when I am at work and overnight. She rarely has accidents in her kennel unless I’m away for too long, but she isn’t potty trained yet. She does still have accidents in the house.” At her young age, Lizzie displays a lot of playful puppy energy and behaviors that will need positive engagement and consistent training. She needs a home that recognizes the joys and responsibilities of raising a young dog. We know she would thrive with patience, dedication, and stability. She would love to find a home with a dog playmate but this is not a requirement. We are open to apartments on a case-by-case basis, but would always love for her to go to a home with access to a yard. If you are interested in Lizzie, please be as detailed as possible in your application responses. Her foster mom will also be reviewing applications and will have the final say. Requirements: - Dog experience is preferred - Older kids preferred (not tested around smalls) - Would love a canine companion but not required Health Status: Lizzie is up-to-date on vaccinations, dewormed, microchipped, spayed, on monthly prevention, and ready to go home! Important Notes: All dogs are located in Texas and will be transported ONLY after adoption, with transportation costs included in the adoption fee. While we make educated guesses about the breed based on their features and characteristics, we cannot guarantee the specific breed mix. We encourage adopters to focus on a dog's personality, behavior, and compatibility with their lifestyle rather than breed labels.
