My Story

ADOPT ME! Maxx, 6 yrs old, located in Florida Rescue ID: 210984-P-D-FL Intake Date: 06/24/2021 Available Date: 06/01/2022 I’m Maxx. I am about 6 years old. I’m believed to have spent much of my youth in Florida. That’s where I was found as a stray and whisked into foster care about a year ago. I had a very hard life before finding my way to Pointer Rescue, but you would never guess that upon meeting me. I’m just a bundle of love! At the time I was found, I was very underweight at about 50 lbs. I had heart worms and hook worms, as well as some eye, skin and dental issues. Since joining my foster family, I’ve gained 15 pounds and my health, vitality and disposition have improved greatly. I have been successfully treated for the heart worms and got neutered and microchipped. Since the neutering, I’ve gotten decidedly mellower - but I’m still an active guy. My eye and skin issues are much better now that I’m on a vet formula diet and take periodic baths with a therapeutic oatmeal shampoo. In my past life, I was probably kept in a cage, kennel, or tied out on a chain. This resulted in some unusual and excessive wearing and chipping of my teeth, but the vet says I’m doing fine despite that and it has not affected my health or my ability to have the most precious smile. My current home has a doggie door and a securely fenced yard. I quickly learned the doggie door and I’ve never attempted to pull a “great escape.” I don’t dig (unless I see a varmint) and I’m respectful of plants, pillows, and playthings. I’m also a music lover and will often join in when my foster plays piano. I have a lovely singing voice! When PRO found out about me I was stuck in a shelter on what they call "death row." It was a very scary place, but luckily PRO was able to save me! Once I got to my foster home, they realized I wasn't actually a Pointer, but a mixed breed. I tip the scales at 65 pounds which is a bit bigger than your typical Pointer. In my foster home I have a PRO sister (Amber) and a PRO brother (Chase). We get along famously! Despite being a stockier dude than either Amber or Chase, we have a great time playing together and we’re pretty evenly matched! I play fairly gently and I’m typically the first to roll over on my back and let Amber win the game. I don’t fetch but I do enjoy tug-of-war, “keep away!” and a good bout of wrestling. I love to explore our fenced yard with Amber or just sunbathe with Chase. I can be dog selective with strange dogs in unfamiliar settings, but I’ve been very successful with the other dogs at daycare. I would also thrive in a home as an only dog. I would totally adore being the center of attention. I’m a super cuddler and really love a good belly rub. And I love, love, love kisses! What I really desire most is to be around people. My perfect home would include someone who works from home or is retired since I don’t enjoy being left alone for long stretches of time. Given that I spent the first half of my life being isolated and ignored, I’m not looking to go back to that. Initially, I was not a fan of being crated, but that has changed. It took some time for me to re-introduce myself to being comfortable in the crate, but now I LOVE my crate and feel very happy and cozy in it. It’s like having my very own room! My foster folks have found that it’s best to limit my cuddling to the couch and to let me sleep in my crate or a dog bed, rather than in the human bed. That’s fine by me. I’ll even put myself to bed if you don’t personally tuck me in by 11 o’clock! I’m also very punctual about meals and walks. I’m a sweet boy, but I’m still learning all the dos and don’ts of being someone’s beloved pet. My foster folks have been helping me by keeping me leashed in new situations and around new people and pets until we’re certain I understand the group dynamics. I’m really smart though and eager to learn, I had a concentrated training program this past summer and I was amazingly successful. My foster’s can provide video of my training successes. I’ll need someone who has the patience, time and willingness to continue my training. Could that be you? https://pointerrescue.org/adoption-info/
