About NICO:
We got an email from one of our favorite Indiana rescuers
about a sweet senior Malamute in dire need of rescue. She wrote: "You guys are
probably full, but I thought I'd take the chance. We just got in a very loving
and sweet, full-blooded Alaskan Malamute. He was surrendered by a guy who joined
the armed services and waited too long to try and find him a home. The dog's
name is Nico. He's already neutered, reported to be housebroken, and had basic
obedience training as a young dog. He is 11 years old, which I know certainly
doesn't work in his favor with most rescues. Luckily, he's actually in great
health and definitely doesn't look his age. Nico is just a prince of a dog. He's
very good on a leash, and VERY loving. I tried him with some of our more sedate
dogs, and he did very well, particularly considering I subjected him to an
unfamiliar pack of around 5 dogs of various sexes, sizes, and breeds. He
is very sad at the shelter, and woo's mournfully. It's heartbreaking.
Can you help him?"
Well, we think dogs like Nico are what rescue is all ABOUT! It's certainly
not his fault that his owner didn't plan ahead. He didn't stand much of a
chance of getting out of the shelter alive due to his status as a "senior" dog.
Well, we prefer to think of them as "seasoned" dogs! There are simply no
words to describe the many, many qualities that make senior dogs such loving,
therapeutic companions. They are way past the puppy phase, generally have
learned wonderful house manners, and have given a lifetime of love and devotion
to a family. To see them end up in shelters just breaks our hearts,
particularly given how special they ALWAYS prove to be. The seniors have a
depth of character that younger dogs simply haven't had time to acquire. A
senior dog truly understands when you've given them a second chance, and we
guarantee you will feel the genuine love and gratitude that radiates from Nico
if you open your home to provide him with a place to enjoy his golden years.
H needs are simple -- a loving hand, a gentle voice, a warm room to sleep in, a
food bowl that's always available, and a soft place to lay their head.
Nicor will make a great friend
someone
looking for a gentle companion to share walks through the falling autumn leaves,
long winter nights beside you on the couch, in front of a roaring fire, the
first buds of spring, and fireflies in the summer. PLEASE consider making
this special, loving boy a part of your life.
Due to a lack of foster homes, we had to place Nico with our rescue partner at
the paid boarding kennel in order to save his life. Without boarding, he'd
have died in the shelter. If you can't adopt,
you can still help Nico by contributing toward his 'room and board'.
Please see more info on how to donate, below!
Nico is new to our program, and we look forward to learning more about
him. In the meantime, though we do our best, we don't always get the
updates up as quickly as we'd like, and there's often new information that isn't
yet posted. If you are interested in Nico, please
EMAIL US
to request more information and/or an adoption application. This
dog's adoption donation is $200. If you know how much it costs to give a new dog responsible vet care, you can easily see that this is quite a bargain!
This dog has had a complete health exam, has already been altered (spayed or
neutered), is microchipped, has tested negative for heartworm, has been kept on heartworm and flea preventative, is fully vaccinated and free of parasites.
What to do if you want to
adopt this dog: Just SEND AN EMAIL to request an adoption application!
We will review your application to determine if there is a good match
between your family and this dog. We may suggest another if we can offer a
better fit in terms of lifestyle, experience, other pets, etc. A vet check, reference checks, and a home visit will be conducted before an adoption can be considered for approval.
NOTE:
In the vast majority of cases, the dogs in our program are rescued from
shelters, and Northern Lights has no means by which to collect or verify a dog's
history. We work in concert with our veterinarians, and breed and age
estimates are based on a combination of professional input and our collective
experience. Our policy with information acquired while the dogs are in our
care is that of "full disclosure". It is our goal to ensure the
adopter has all available information to ensure the best possible match between
the dog and the adopting person or family. In some instances, because of
applicant interest, dogs are in our program for relatively brief periods of
time. If we have identified a temperament or health condition while
the dog is in our care and custody, every effort will be made to correct it prior to
adoption OR the adopter will be made aware of the
issue or condition prior to adoption. Northern Lights' screening process
is designed to select only adopters who are willing, and have the means, to
treat conditions which may occur after adoption, and adopter will be
contractually responsible for doing so.
NORTHERN
LIGHTS IS NOT A SHELTER. We are a rescue comprised of individuals who open their private homes to
foster dogs in need of a second chance.
