My Story

Pancho is a 3-year-old, 22 lb., Spaniel mix (some of us have guessed maybe Cavalier, but his legs are awfully long!) who was surrendered with several other adult dogs from near Des Moines at the end of June. You couldn't ask for a more loving guy! He will snuggle with you on the couch or on the bed anytime you say the word. He is very reliable with potty training once he settles in and is comfortable in his environment, but he may mark the first couple of days after moving into his new home. He loves to ride in the car with his paw on your shoulder -he calls shotgun! He loves to be brushed and pet and will let you know when he is feeling neglected on either count. Pancho was (and clearly remains!) the boss in his previous household and seems to be somewhat under socialized. He needs help understanding that he doesn't need to worry about getting attention, food, or toys. He is hesitant when first meeting new people and may bark a bit until he gets comfortable and allows people to approach him. After a few hours of settling in, he becomes quickly attached to humans and can show his dominance in the form of being possessive of his human with other dogs and people. This boy just needs a home where they are willing to help him understand that he does not have to worry about claiming his things and people. Pancho's behaviors are likely due to a bit of anxiety moving from a very busy, but uninvolved household to his foster home where he receives tons of love and affection as well as interaction with other dogs outside his previous pack. Pancho is so ready to begin living his life with the security, love, understanding, and rules that will allow him to relax and provide the companionship he was meant to provide to his humans. While he may do well in a multiple dog home, his desire to be the alpha may be an issue in the presence of another alpha dog in the home. We are going to begin training with him in early August, 2024 to see if we can help figure out how to lessen these behaviors. If you are interested in meeting Pancho, please complete an online application at https://hopeanimalrescueofiowa.duplie.com/forms/196/dog-application Adoption fee is $250 which includes spay/neuter, microchip, and age appropriate vaccines.
