Paulie

Paulie is a male, 2-year old chihuahua/fox terrier mix weighing 9 lbs. He is being fostered by SNIPSA in a home in San Antonio after he was rescued from San Antonio's Animal Control. SNIPSA treated Paulie for heartworms after he was rescued and he is now doing fine.

Paulie is a very cute and precious little dog, but he is a "special needs" dog. Paulie is very affectionate and lovable towards people he knows. What makes him "special needs" is that he is extremely wary of strangers, sometimes to the point of growling or baring his teeth. This ONLY happens with people he doesn't know. To date (4-14-09) he has been in fostercare with the same family for 7 months and has integrated well into their household routine. Paulie gets along well with the other dogs in his foster home, as well as with the children and has developed a trust of this family. He would also do the same in a new home; however, it may take him awhile to become acclimated to a new home. This is what makes him "special needs".

Paulie needs a home with people who understand the importance of gaining his trust on his terms, even if this takes a while. Understandably, most people like their newly adopted dog to be an instant cuddler - a dog they can immediately pick up and hug. Paulie would likely find this scary and threatening at first; however, once he trusts his new people, he would delight in being picked up and loved upon, as his foster family experiences this with him now. Paulie also loves to play with toys, racing through the backyard with a rubber toy in his mouth, challenging members of his foster family to play!

Paulie is housebroken and crate-trained, with excellent house manners. Because of his issues, Paulie would do best in a quiet home without alot of activity or commotion. He has been neutered, he is current on vaccinations and is microchipped.
