My Story

Penny, Penny's puppies, and her mama came from a household that was overwhelming and couldn't meet her needs. There were lots of dogs, some fights, and very few people around. She is currently in a foster that is unable to do more than provide a beautiful, peaceful, outdoor space for her and her mama, Addie. Penny is a fearful, skittish dog, but has made great strides since we took her in early in 2023. With no aggressive bones in her body, Penny is just so uncertain of people. She is currently on a medication to help reduce her anxiety. We are currently working on "treat and retreat" with her, in which she has shown us that having a reward when she takes space helps her gain trust and want to try more. She takes treats out of our staff's hands often, but at times feels more fearful and does a lot of "testing the waters" to make sure she is safe. She has been a great mama to at least one litter of puppies, all of whom we were able to adopt out. She plays well with her mama and other dogs in the shelter. When you see her let loose and wag her little tail, it's like a weight is lifted! Penny needs a home that will be so patient in helping her learn that she is safe. She has so much desire to trust and still needs a lot of reinforcement. Penny may do best in a home with another mellow dog, or where she has a caretaker that can give her lots of intentional, structured time to get used to the new routines around her. She needs to have access to inside and outside spaces. Penny is very food motivated, which has been extremely useful in her progress so far. She is so sweet, and has shown that when people are consistent in her life, she can make leaps toward being a happy, safe, affectionate companion dog.
