My Story

Poppy is ready for adoption! Poppy is approximately 7.5 years of age and until last November, never lived inside a house. She is from Northern Manitoba and because she lived outdoors her entire life, she had multiple litters of puppies throughout the years. When she had her last litter in the Fall, the “owners” allowed volunteers to take her and the babies into care to keep them safe. While in care in Winnipeg, she sadly tested positive for Heartworm. The owners did not want to pay for the treatment and she was surrendered into the care of the amazing folks at K9 Advocacy. She has adjusted beautifully to living inside and loves being on the couch, dog beds and sleeping on the bed with her foster. She is quiet in the house and will occasionally bark to alert if someone is at the door. Poppy is a very sweet girl and extremely affectionate. And we aren’t kidding - extremely affectionate is an understatement. She loves all humans and if she could crawl inside them, she would. She loves to be as close as possible. She adores pets and being brushed. She will nudge you with her head or paw at you to encourage more touching. Her eyes light up when she is told she is a good girl. She loves meeting new people and has done a lot of socializing since joining us.. She enjoys her walks and goes twice a day. She likes meeting other dogs and people on her walks. She remembers every house that has barking dogs in their backyard and makes a wide berth around them. She pulls a bit at the beginning but is quite manageable with a no-pull harness. Poppy is completely housetrained. She has a good “sit” inside the house and patiently waits for her food bowl at mealtime. Her recall is quite good and will come running when you call her. She is still learning outside as there are so many distractions. She really responds to squeaky toys and loves to carry them around and will come running from anywhere when she hears the squeak. She is good when left alone for up to 7 hours. She really enjoys her backyard and will sniff every blade of grass to determine what critters have run through it. We would like to see her have a safely fenced backyard as she really enjoys being outside. She has done very well with meeting other dogs and approaches with a nice body language. She doesn’t seem to want to really engage with them and is not looking for any trouble. She lived happily with 2 other large dogs in her Winnipeg foster home. She can be the “fun police” with other dogs and if they start playing together, she may bark to break up the nonsense. Even though she does fine with other dogs, she can show jealousy by giving a growl if they get too involved with her people. Based on this, we think a home with her as the only dog is the best fit. Poppy might be 7.5 years old but she is up for whatever you throw at her. She will follow her people around during the day. She gets so excited for car rides and is quite good while driving. She loves going on adventures and will walk or hike as far as you want to go. She has currently been going for 2 walks per day totalling one hour and really enjoys them. Poppy is a lovely companion and such a sweetheart. She adores people and wants to please them. Because of her size and exuberance we do think she would do best in an adult home or one with older children. Poppy has already had her spay surgery, is up to date on her vaccines, has been dewormed and microchipped. She is in good health without mobility issues and her teeth are in good condition. We have done full blood work on her and it came back very good. She will require a 4DX blood test in November to ensure her heartworm treatment was successful and this will be covered by the rescue. In the very unlikely event she needs to repeat treatment, that would also be covered by our rescue. Poppy currently weighs around 32kg but should lose another 3kg approximately to be at her optimal weight and to keep her healthy. Our adoption process includes an online application (see below), a zoom interview, reference checks and a meet & greet with Poppy in Pickering. Her adoption fee is $500.
