My Story

A word from her foster: Meet Rasha (She has David Bowie eyes) When I first saw Rasha at HHS back in April she was super skinny and did not present well in her kennel. She would cower and bark and she looked like a dog that won 2 nd place in the ugly dog contest. As a HHS volunteer dog walker I started walking her a few times a week and started to discover what a nice dog she really is. After a few weeks of walking her I decided I would try a walk off of HHS property and that went fine so I decided I would take her home for a night or two just to get her of the shelter for a few days. I could see she was experiencing stress from being in the shelter and a break would be good. Now over a month later the thought of putting her back in the shelter pains me and I'm happy to foster her until she finds her new home. From day one it was apparent Rasha was an indoor dog that had some training. She is house trained and has not had an accident in the house She obeys our directions to stay off furniture and beds She does not jump up on counters or snitch food from coffee table Comes when called and will sit and shake on command Does not bark much but does at the things you would expect: door bell, knocking, etc. Seems healthy, eats all of her food and has regular poops. Current weight is 37 pounds and anther pound or two would be about right And more...... Crate: She tolerates being in a crate but is not happy in it. She is restless and barks. We have started leaving her alone when we leave and she does fine with the exception that she does get on the couch she is not allowed on when we are home. Cats: At shelter she ignores the cats but HHS recommendation is use caution Dogs: She is reactive to other dogs and will sometimes bark. Other times we can pass a dog with no reaction. Would need a meet and greet with other household dogs. Leash and walking: She is pretty good on the leash and will break off a squirrel or other dog with a "leave it and a gentle tug. Loves walks and runs and has lots of energy. Triggers: She is very tolerant and shows no aggression when ears, feet, tail are pulled. Baths and nail trimming are no big deal. Kids: She has been around young children (1-6 y.o.) with no problems. She will take treats very gently from their hands. Affectionate: She will approach for a head pat, roll over for a belly rub and if I'm laying on the couch she will put up one paw, then the next and then a back leg and the other and I'm cuddling with all 37 pounds (then I have to tell her to get down) Toys: She will chew up soft toys. She has hard toys but does not chew them much. She has not chewed on anything else in the house. Tall men: For some reason she barks at tall men. If a tall man comes up and just stands there she is fine after a few minutes. Eyes: She has a blue eye and a brown eye. Mismatched, just like David Bowie. Rasha is a nice little dog that is easy to overlook but for the right person/family she could be a great addition and friend. As hard as I try I can no longer see that ugly dog I first saw. She looks at me, sometimes with the brown eye, sometimes the blue, and I have to go give her a pat on the head. Thanks for looking.
