My Story

Update 5/17/05: Remi is such a love bug. She is now in foster care & having a blast. Her foster parents took her to upstate NY this past weekend & she loved it. Here's what they had to say: Remi was so tired from running around on Saturday that she was sleeping standing up on Sunday. She is not a big fan of water. She would not go near the pond and would not cross the creek. There was a breakthrough on Sunday though when she stepped on a wet rock. She gets along great with the resident male GSP. She doesn't really know how to play and just buries every treat that you give her. This morning I actually think I saw her do a little skip:). WOW. She is starting to feel more at ease and is getting a personality. With regards to any food aggression, she has no problem if I feed her out of my hand or pet her back or walk around her while she eats, but she will growl when I touch her head while she's eating or if I go for the food bowl. I have been laying down the law and then she comes over and jumps all over me and licks my face and starts mouthing me. We're working on this so that she knows her food will always be there for her, not like her last home when she didn't know when her next meal would come.

Poor Remi has suffered from neglect for 8 years and when we got her she looked like she hadn't eaten in weeks. We were informed that the neglect was an ongoing problem throughout her life and now she needs a forever home to love her & care for her for the rest of her days. She's about 40 lbs now & should weigh closer to 50. She's crate trained, housebroken and hunt trained too. She's ok with other dogs. She lived in a home with kids from infants on up but we recommend she go to a home with no toddlers. We were originally told that she was food aggressive but we are not sure how true that statement is since we have not found that to be the case. She will let other dogs share her water bowl & doesn't mind the other dogs around while she's eating either. Although we're not going to push her with trying to take food from her just yet since she was starving, we do not believe she is truly food aggressive. She may have exhibited some aggression toward her owner who was physically abusive and wasn't feeding her for days at a time and when he fed her she may have told him to stay away because she wasn't going to miss that meal not knowing when the next one would come. She loves to play and does have a strong prey drive so a home with no kitties or other small creatures would be best.
