My Story

5/15/10: Rocky is FABULOUS with his foster family's three-year-old daughter. He graciously accepts her hugs, and he's a great sport when she wants to dress him up and dance with him. His tail is always wagging when she's around.

Rocky, who needed to lose a few pounds, gets lots of exercise besides dancing. He loves to run and play with his foster family's dogs and he is growing fitter by the day! His healthier lifestyle really agrees with him.

5/1/10: Rocky, a strikingly handsome seven-year-old Labrador mix has arrived in foster care in Maine. He's a big guy, weighing in at 100 pounds - so there's a lot of him to love! But he's a gentle giant who hopes to find his forever family soon. He's been waiting a long time - especially if you count in dog years.

Rocky's foster mom said he reminded her of a small draft horse when he lumbered off the truck after his three-day drive from Arkansas. The big guy was probably a little bit squished in the crate; he sure was happy to stretch out.

Rocky jumped easily into the car, even after traveling for so long already. He snoozed in the back seat for the whole drive to his foster home. He settled in with his foster family's resident dogs like a long-lost family member, and he had a blast exploring the backyard with them. He does not, however, do well with cats, and needs a feline free home.

Rocky loves attention and follows the people around, tail wagging until they pet him.

Rocky's girth isn't a big mystery - this fellow is food oriented! Rocky is familiar with the refrigerator and with pizza; his foster mom had to tell him to get his nose out of the fridge. His ears also perked up when the microwave dinged. Rock will need regular walks to lose the extra weight, but ultimately he would prefer to be a low-exercise kind of dog. He's happier snoring on the sofa than doing aerobic exercise.

Rocky is house trained, but he needs work on his leash manners. Like most rescue dogs, he could benefit from continued obedience training. If you're looking for a lot of handsome, easy-going guy to love, ask about Rocky today!

Notes from our partner shelter:

Rocky has been treated for Heartworm and is ready to rock and roll.

He is looking for his new home in New England. Applications are being accepted for this handsome guy.

Rocky has tested positive for Heartworm and will receive his treatments in Arkansas. Donations are being accepted to help defray treatment costs. Rocky is still available for his adoption, but will not be able to arrive until May.

He is 95 pounds and the cost of his treatment will be $600 because of his size. If you would like to donate to Rocky's treatment, please copy and paste the following link:

Rocky is approximately 7 - 8 years old in these pictures taken February 13, 2010. at our partner shelter in Arkansas. He came back to the shelter after his owners had to return him and his brother, Dillon (who is already in foster care in Maine), in October 2009 because they are moving and can't take them with them. They were originally adopted from the shelter in 2005.

This is what Rocky's mom says about him: Rocky is the perfect gentleman with manners and will gladly shake your hand. He's a big teddy bear who loves chin scratches and ear rubs. Treat time really gets Rocky's tail wagging. He will sit as still as possible and catch whatever treat is on the menu-- he's a big fan of milkbones and rawhides. So sweet and calm, Rocky is a forever friend.

Neither boys are really trained on a leash so walking them may not be as smooth of a process as it should be. I'm sure with more training, it will become easier.

When it comes to cats, I wouldn't trust Rocky near one. He's kind of a hunter at heart too so expect him to run after squirrels, birds, etc.

Both boys are great indoors too-- they will let you know when they need to go outdoors to do their business, mainly by going to stand by the back door. If the future owners plan on leaving them indoors for a long period of time while not at home, I would recommend that the boys be surrounded with things they love, as I can see Dillon especially being curious and possibly chewing up what he might find to be a fun toy (if it is accessible to him).

This dog is available unless it is marked as Pending, meaning "pending adoption".

If this Dog is marked Urgent, it is because the Arkansas shelter where he/she resides is overfull. Please do not ask local shelters to take this dog in, there are many reasons why they cannot. Please also do not send us letters about why we euthanize, AHR does not euthanize, but the shelters we work with do. We are a rescue and we pull as many dogs as we have foster homes and funds for. We, like the shelter, do not have unlimited resources. Please, please: foster, adopt or sponsor a dog to help save their lives.

FOR PUPPIES: HOMES CONSIDERING PUPPIES MUST BE PREPARED FOR:

FLEXIBLE SCHEDULES FOR POTTY TRAINING-THEY CAN ONLY "HOLD" IT FOR ONE HOUR PER MONTH OF AGE.

CRATE TRAINING FOR THE NEXT 10 MONTHS TO KEEP THEM FROM CHEWING EVERYTHING IN SIGHT.

SUPERVISION WITH CHILDREN, AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING.

SOCIALIZATION-A GOOD DOG MUST BE EXPOSED TO A LOT OF STIMULUS AS A PUPPY SO THAT NEW PEOPLE AND ENVIRONMENTS DO NOT INTIMIDATE THEM AS ADULTS. THE MORE POSITIVE EXPERIENCES -IN AND OUT OF THE HOME- AS A PUPPY, THE BETTER.

HOMES THAT WANT TO HAVE GOOD DOGS, MUST BE PREPARED TO PUT THE TIME AND EFFORT INTO TRAINING A PUPPY. IT IS A LOT OF WORK!!! THEIR BEHAVIOR AND STAGES ARE EQUIVALENT TO A 2 OR 3 YEAR OLD CHILD. IT TAKES A FULL YEAR TO HAVE A CALMER, WELL ADJUSTED DOG! PLEASE DO NOT CONSIDER ADOPTING IF YOU HAVE NOT THOROUGHLY THOUGHT THROUGH THE PROS AND CONS OF A PUPPY...SO MANY PEOPLE END UP RETURNING THEM IN 3-5 MONTHS BECAUSE IT IS CHEWING, JUMPING AND HYPER. THIS IS NORMAL PUPPY BEHAVIOR.

PATIENCE, CHEWIES, SOCIALIZATION, SUPERVISION AND OBEDIENCE TRAINING IS A MUST!!

. We pay a Transportation Service from Arkansas to bring the dogs to New England. The adoption fee is $300 for dogs up to 6 months of age, $250 for dogs 7 months-5 years, and $200 for dogs 5 years and older. This includes vaccinations, spay/neuter, microchip, and transport from Arkansas to Maine on a USDA approved transport with a Health Certificate. All dogs are quarantined 14 days prior to leaving Arkansas. All dogs will be tested for Heartworm prior to adoption. Almost Home Rescue will process your adoption. Applications can be found at www.almosthomerescue.net and can be e-mailed attention of Adele at lonepine_ahr@yahoo for this particular dog. Click HEREto visit our site.
