My Story

Ruby joined Mattie's Place in July 2023. Her DOB is: 08-03-19 and she weighs in around 20 pounds (she fluctuates down a few pounds then can pack a few pounds back on to 20 again) Ruby is great with humans, male or female, but she does need a minute to warm up. She's also tolerant to dogs and is in foster care with many, many dogs and prefers her independence over being buddy, buddy, but she can live with dogs. That said, she'd likely be happiest as the only dog. She is not cat tested but presumably would be okay with a dog savvy cat. Ruby has some vocal reactivity on leash with some dogs; she'll bark and cause a fuss, but is easily distracted and will move forward with her handler. She doesn't have separation anxiety and is fine crated or loose in the home. In October 2023 Ruby's foster zigged and Ruby zagged as they were heading out for a walk and Ruby lost use of her back legs and bladder control. She was rushed to emerge and stayed for 1 week - alongside pain management an MRI and a CT Scan. She was diagnosed with acute non-compressive nucleus pulposus extrusion. This is an intervertebral disc problem that is also known as a ‘high-velocity low volume’ disc extrusion. This happens when excessive force (her foster tripping over her leash) is placed on a normal disc. These excessive forces cause a tear in the outer annulus fibrosus, which allows a small fragment of the nucleus pulposus to fire out of the gelatinous bag and hit the spinal cord at high velocity. This small volume of material does not significantly compress the nerves, but the contusion (bruising) of the spinal cord results in an acute onset of spinal cord injury. In summary, Ruby had a short term back injury from excessive force and after extensive rehab is back to her normal active, all 4 paws in use, self. Unfortunately, this girl has bad luck on her side and in May 2024, she was exiting the elevator with her foster and a passerby bumped Ruby and she gave him a little "nip" to his calf. I have the photo. It looks like a mosquito bite that was scratched open and scabbed. It is the tiniest mark and I will share with her potential adopters. The person felt they should go for emergency medical care and the hospital discharge form indicated no treatment was needed but they cleaned the tiny 1 tooth superficial puncture. Toronto Animal Services felt that warranted a warning to Mattie's Place. A written warning was issued to Ruby under the dangerous dog by-law. [dramatic] Ruby would do best in a single family home or apartment without elevators and hustle and bustle of people coming and going in a confined space. An adopter that has dog experience and extra attention will go to an application that has Min Pin experience. She's a great dog. Ruby deserves a home to call her own. Though it seems the world is against her. FROM HER FOSTER WHO IS ALSO A DOG TRAINER: Ruby is such a fun little dog. She's a great mix of sweet and spicy. She lives to snuggle and curl up under the blankets, loves to be loved up on. But, if Ruby doesn't know you, she will need you to earn her trust by respecting her personal space and allowing her to make her steps at her own pace. Ruby has a really silly side and will play with toys and have zoomies around the house daily. She loves other dogs but can be a bit pushy, so she's best suited with a dog that doesn't take her too seriously. Ruby is a foodie, and snacks are always a good ice breaker for her. ---------------------- To note: the above description is relevant to this dog in his current &/or previous setting.
