Hi! I’m Salvato. My name means “rescued” in Italian and my foster mom thought it quite fitting for me. You see, I was found wandering the streets in Windsor, Ontario. The Humane Society picked me up there and they thought I was too old to be adopted, so they were going to put me to sleep. A rescue in Windsor got word of that and contacted my foster mom about taking me. She did and so I get to live!!!
I’m a senior guy. The vets think I’m about 9, but my foster mom thinks I’m a bit older. I have some age related problems. As you can see from my pictures I have a cataract in one eye (that’s what makes it all white) and I am totally blind. I walk quite slowly and sniff around and every once in a while I bump into stuff, but I walk so slowly that it doesn’t hurt – it just lets me know that there’s something there. I need a baby gate propped up to block me from any stairs, as I don’t know they are there and I will fall right down them. That would be terrible! But I get around just fine in my new foster home and I’ve learned where everything is. I also have a heart murmur, which I guess causes my heart to be enlarged. I suffer from no symptoms of this heart murmur, but the doctor gave me medicine to take once a day. It helps so there is no fluid buildup around my heart and lungs and will help me to live longer and more comfortably. The medicine is not very expensive and I take my one teeny pill every morning in some peanut butter on my foster mom’s finger. I’m really good at it and I love the peanut butter! The vet also said I have a collapsing trachea, but I show no symptoms of that either (symptoms would be a lot of coughing and I never cough), so I don’t even have to take medicine for that. I had some really bad teeth and I wasn't neutered yet either, so my foster mom took me for a dental and neutering a few weeks ago. I had seven teeth pulled and I feel so much better! My mouth is all clean now. Of course, I still have a great appetite and eat very well. My neutering went just fine too!
I’m really good at pottying outside. As soon as you set me down in the grass, I potty right away. I have just recently learned to potty in the gravel at my foster mom’s house too! I don’t know how to tell you that I have to go outside, but my foster mom has learned that when I get up and start wandering around the house, I need to go out. As long as you watch me for that, I won’t have any accidents. If you are too busy to watch for my wandering, I can wear a belly band inside, just in case of any accidents.
I sleep in my crate and I am the BEST boy in there! My foster mom puts me in at bedtime and I never make a peep. I curl right up and go to sleep until she gets me out in the morning. She has to go to work every day too, so I sleep in my crate while she’s gone. I never, ever have accidents in my crate. I do know how to bark. My foster mom knows this because the first 2 nights at her house, I barked for about an hour when she put me to bed in my crate. After that, I’ve never barked any more. Not even when all the other dogs are barking and carrying on. I just mind my own business!
I am extremely gentle and very sweet. My foster mom has a 1 ½ year old grandson who visits and loves me. He’s supervised, of course, when he’s by me, but he very gently lays down on the floor by me and gives me kisses. I love when he does this as I wag my tail and get happy! I love my foster dad a lot! He gets down on the floor with me and I crawl up on him with my tail wagging. I’m really comfortable on him and love when he snuggles with me.
Even though I’m a senior with a few senior health issues, I’m so, so sweet and I would really love to spend the rest of my days in my own permanent home with someone who loves me. Are you that someone?
